I just bought a new bicycle. It's considered an "Adventure Tour" style mountain bike with the more recent large diameter "29er" (a.k.a. 700c) fat tire wheel set.

The bike has a lot of "braze ons" which are threaded studs that you can use to attach accessories like luggage racks, fenders, water bottles, radios etc.

There are a total of 21 "water bottle bolts" stuck in the frame. It looks like a pin'ed up punk rocker. These bolts, when unused, are just extra weight, so it is hard to appreciate them. They do serve to plug up the holes that would be left if you discarded the ones you didn't use, so most of us keep them installed even if we have no use for them. Most bikes have 4 of these bolts... the guys specifying the bike I bought got carried away.

I can't help myself...  I have found some nylon plastic replacement bolts of a suitable size; 5mm x 0.8mm thread pitch, and will replace all the bolts that aren't being used to attach something. That's most of them.

I'm gonna save a few onces, it will only cost the price of two of the fancy (and relatively heavy) titanium bolts some guys use for the purpose, and I'll have 70 extras to give away as gifts to my bicycle buddies when they stop in for water bottle refills while on their forest rides. :-)

I thought you might get a laugh (or a good natured smirk) out of this.

:-)

all the best,
mike

I'm an advocate of plastic bolts.

I have replaced the one that goes through my neck.  The metal ones always cause a rash.

Which reminds me, my future son in law procured a bike for me some while back and I've yet to take delivery of it.

At least I'm suspecting it is a bike as they hinted at having a large present for me which they couldn't bring last time they visited as they came by train, and the only other thing I've ever hinted at wanting that was too large to bring is an artillery battery for managing the car park for the store I live above.

So just maybe it is the gun, if it is the gun I shall retain the metal bolts for that I think.

I think if I replaced my neck bolt with a white one it might look a bit spooky.

I don't want to frighten the kids.
