They'll go down, and reinvent themselves next year as Preaux Tools.

If you read the link, the "investigation" is by a law firm (actually two) that are specialists in litigation (were they not law firms many would call it shaking down) corporations. On the law firm websites you will find attempts to woo "whistle blowers" who might actually have some real information about the issue.

This is not a government investigation, it is some lawyers trying to find out if there is a way for them to make money recruiting clients from among the shareholders.

(Secret meeting at Roland HQ)

"Well, I'd say that Operation Tool is a surprising success!"

"Are we certain nothing can be traced back to us?"

"Of course!  We followed all of the recommended protocols.  Secret message drops, payments routed through the Cayman Islands, unfriending Avid on Facebook...  You name it, we did it."

"How long will the 'Investigation' take?"

"It only has to last long enough to take them down a few notches!"

"So, do we proceed with Operation Steinberg?"

"Let's give it a few weeks."

"As a precautionary measure, we should also greenlight Operation Presonus."

"Really?  I like those guys.  They're kind of funny."

"I suppose we could hold off for a while."

"Are we sure no one suspects anything?"

"Absolutely.  I'm just going to upload these meeting videos to Facebook for safekeeping."

Who knows what this means.

Option 1: The have already abandoned the consumer line and dumped M-Audio. Could be they go back to the high-end only approach and focus on movie studios and remaining sound studios at the same time walking away from the home studio market. Welcome back to proprietary hardware.

Option 2: They get serious about the consumer market and improve their midi functionality while simultaneously focusing on broader adoption of 3rd party interfaces.

Option 3: They sell off to Roland and we get a product with the best midi and best audio hybrid capability.

Option 4: The rats start leaving the ship before it sinks.

Option 5: They develop their own consumer low cost hardware and make it required. That might be the ticket for future profitability if they have not drained the cash flow.
