I've just acquired the Waldorf Edition and stumbled upon a nifty little "bug".

As usual when I buy a new synth, I was auditioning the presets in PPG Wave 2 and saving them as regular Audio Unit presets, so that I could access them directly from my DAW's browser instead of via the synth's GUI. This also provides me w/ an opportunity to further classify them and create a favorites list folder.

I was going through the 3rd one of those preset banks when Logic crashed while I was trying to save a preset. Tried again - poof, same result. Skipped that particular preset: all was fine.

Odd.

Then I went through another bank. All fine until another specific preset caused the same issue. That's when I noticed that those 2 presets had something in common - there was a blank space in place of one of the character in the preset's name.

So I launched Cubase. Lo and behold, the preset name shows up full, only w/ an odd character.

What displayed as R chel DK in Logic (and Studio One) shows as follow in Cubase:







Now the issue is that many of those presets seem to feature such characters. I've e-mailed Waldorf to inquire whether they had a system tweak or workaround, posted on the Logic board...


I know it's a loooooooooong shot considering that I'm on a different platform using a different DAW, but as anyone ever seen a similar issue and found a cure for it?


Man, it's amazing how such insignificant little things can cause such issues.

I should add that I not only get a crash when trying to save the problematic presets themselves, but when attempting to save a project w/ any of those loaded in the song.

I guess there's a missing resource to handle them, causing the crash.

The only thing I can think of is that whomever made those particular presets is partial to using odd characters that may be unique to their language character set, and that this same person also happens to create presets that are prone to crashing the thing (for whatever reason).

I've had other apps fail due to non-ansi characters.  If what you're using doesn't have the full unicode character set then it doesn't know what to do with anything outside of the norm.  Many non-English speaking countries have extra characters and use them to describe patches (or even with their name) so you need to modify each one of these to only use ansi characters before trying to use them somewhere else.

Yep, I thought I could try and re-save them in Cubase since it doesn't exhibit the issue, but unfortunately, it'd only work w/ the VST, which is of no use to me. That's if I could even over-write factory presets.

Have you checked on Waldorf's site to make sure you have the latest update installed?.

They're up to version 3, but isn't 2.3 available prior to that latest release? 

I'm not sure because I don't have it. Just saying.

I plan on upgrading to version 3 but I'd like to see if I can get that little issue solved before I send them more $. The synth itself is sweet.

Sorry I can't be of any further help. I have not encountered this sort of issue before. 

Ah heck, one other thing you could try after exhausting support from Waldorf is to create a folder (PPG Faulty Presets-Backup) and drop those funky weird presets that are giving you issues into that new folder.

I think it may be OK to do as I suggested but first, contact Waldorf support and if all else fails to resolve the issue? Ask them if it is OK to do as I suggested (remove funky weird named files that causes crash and remove + backup to a newly created folder named: PPG Faulty Presets-Backup. At least then you shouldn't get any crashes. 

Oh another thing you could try; Look at the Lib-Presets on the original source files and see if those presets are exactly what you have.... See if those weird funky named files exist in the original source files. 

Most synths have a utility (or you can find even better ones on the internet - especially in user groups) that allow you to change the patch information.  Usually, they can save, restore and modify many more things about the patches but, for your needs, if you can change the name on before using the patch it should solve your issue.

FWIW - I used to use MIDI Quest which had premade layouts for most of the synths that I owned.  No idea if they're still around though...

I should add that the utilties I'm referring to usually can work with software-based synths as well as hardward-based ones.
