  • Most disturbing photo I have seen in a long time (p.2)

I'm interested in history, old photos, curiosities. It seems strange that people can quite happily view photos of Nazi Germany, or the old Soviet regime, or Chairman Mao (or listen  to artists who supported totalitarian monsters - Pete Seeger anyone?), they manufacture outrage when faced with select other things. I'm not trying to downplay what the KKK did here...let's face it they were (and are) sub-human scumbags....but when you think about how many people the Soviets and Mao murdered in the name of their ideology (well over 100 million) it seems like we should balk over any imagery which portrays or hints at these eras of history, if we're talking outrage or offense. Yet we can ridicule the Nazis with comedy (Three Stooges anyone) and pass around hilarious internet video memes which overdub new dialog on a movie scene with Adolfo Hitler....hell even the Germans released a comedy about Hitler a few years ago. And we're talking about someone who gassed millions of people and started a war which killed 60 million.

What I found interesting about that photo is that it's both disturbing in a creepy kind of way, yet simultaneously mocks the KKK by making them look ridiculous (as indeed any photograph of them enjoying "normal life" does).

Like I say, I'm just interested in history and photographic curiosities like this. You should take a look around the Retronaut site, it's a wealth of bizarre historical photos like this, and some of them are creepy, yes. But OK, if anyone's going to be "offended" them I'll take the link down.

Strange........? I'd say..........sad.........de-meaning............ inflammatory...........uncalled for...........

You are right Zungle and I didn't mean to minimize the horror of the Klan but it is a part of our history, an unsavory one, but still a part. Ignoring it wont change it. Not being a part of it or tolerating friends who are sympathetic will change it. I guess being out in the NW there is more of this sort of thing, well in Idaho anyway. I am in GA and have never seen anyone in a klan outfit nor have I known anyone who talked about it. Thank God things are changing but in this world there will always be hatred and people willing to act on it.
Seeing it may be a good thing lest people forget.

I can imagine them laughing under those masks of hatred and is really creepy. Remember the democrat senator from West Virginia who was a klan leader... can't remember his name. He was given a bit of a pass because of his age... and this picture is 1929. Thangs have changed a LOT since 1929 (for most people).

I was born in 1952 and was raised in segregation, raised when using the "N" word was common. As a child I thought nothing of it, it meant nothing. I graduated HS in 1970. Full integration came in 1971 with bussing and all that. In that climate of social change and realization, I stopped using that word. I wish I could say the same for a lot of other people in the rural south, but it wasn't so.
Yeah, I had certain prejudices built in but I made a concious effort to not let them out, to act differently from what came natural.. after a while it became natural to see blacks as no different, though that isn't what I (or much of anyone else white at the time) was taught.

I (and another guy) were the only whites at ABAC (a farming college in south GA) who had a black room mate. I visited his home and other places because I made up my mind that my prejudice was wrong.

Now, if people ignore the ugliness of the past they will not know of the wickedness and may well fall into the same thing again. I see no problem with posting the picture and I don't think anyone here thinks that it is an admirable picture or people to emuate.

I am not trying to start an argument with you, I like you... just stating another POV. Our history is chock FULL of abominations. We practiced genocide against the native americans for a couple of centuries then we pinted out finger at Germany for doing the same thing... the only real difference is that we won and the Germans lost. Hyprocracy is almost as ugly as bigotry. There are few true racists, we were in dealing with the "indians", the nazis were in dealing with Jews and other minorities.

The klan symbolizes this racism. Most people wh are considered to be racists are really just bigots... they just plain don't like other races, we ALL have prejudices, some are helpful some are harmful.

Racism considers other races to be inherantly inferior.
Bigotry just don't like other races.
Prejudice "judges a book by its cover" "a person by the way the look, dress, talk, or other things" a situation by things they see or hear... it can be, as I said harmful or helpful. We have swung too far in our fight against racism and bigotry by including any sort of prejudice. Profiling, for example, though possibly unfair to some people at some times may actually be helpful if not utilized by someone who is also either a racist (not likely) or a bigot.

We had best not forget the past and we had better always be on guard in our own heart to not allow racial bigotry to take root... if someone is a racist, they need a lot more help for the roots are already too deep. I remember black and white water fountains/bathrooms/windows at fast food resturants/seperate everything... and while at the time, being a kid, it seemed normal but after it came to an end I was able to see it for what it was. Everyone needs to get over it and never forget... never forget. IMO

Anyway... Sharke didn't post this pic and say, "hey, this is funny... look at this". It is educational.

Julien (I hope there aren't too many typos... I still hate this keyboard).

this is a great post,i respect everything you have seen and the choices you have made.
i hope my post to sharke didnt seem like i was ordering him to remove this link.
it was merely a suggestion.

but i also am firm on believing that cakewalk's offical site is no place for photos like this.
there are 3 things i think should not be discussed in the forum and i believe all 3 are in the TOS for good reasons.
religion,polotics and rasicim.

they just seem to be loaded topics.
for instance for someone to look at this and say something it came be taken the wrong way,

You're probably right Charlie... some things touch deeply. You know what really bothers me... the racial divide in this country, the USA in particular, between black and white and most people don't even know why they don't like each other. It is almost like an abstract dislike, a dislike of difference, a fear/hatred of the unknown. It is just crazy... I can't help but think that if there was more of a truthful dialog there might finally be some real healing. I relly don't quite know how to say it.... but I agree, you're probably right... nothing here was done mailciously.

It seems to me that if we're banning controversial topics of discussion on this forum, that Sonar X2a should be the first and foremost taboo....LOL

This was not a racist post. It was about anti-racism. You think we cannot talk about anti-racism in the coffee house?

I for one would like to think that the issue of the Klan being evil is not a "controversial" subject among the regulars here...

I mean if the subject were "affirmative action" or something like that, you'd expect a certain diversity of views. Can't imagine anyone here standing up the KKK though.

Thanks Sharke.

I easily found the link to the picture in question on that general interest photo site.

It just showed that really common theme among those that pursue a racist agenda.  Arrogance.  If there's one thing that all racist organizations have had in common, aside from a pathological fear of something they don't understand or recognize as being their own image, and that is a need to wear intimidating regalia and strut round in it as if massaging their big fluffy tailed ego's into a coiffured peak.

Another thing they like is to shut down the open discussion of anything that they don't like.

How anyone can see that picture for anything other than exactly what it is defeats me.  The only thing I find offensive is that people still engage in that kind of garbage still especially when you see how ridiculous it really looks when you can take a long cold hard stare at it.

It's the complete antithesis to the freedom to say anything you like without fear of someone else imposing their view on yours.  Now that is really offensive!

Facists on a Ferris wheel need laughing at!

Hey, I'm a racist.  I don't mind admitting it.

If they're not from the human race, then I'm probably going to be a bit prejudice against them.

Just sayin'...
