It is always at once revealing and sad to get the inside scoop on these type of artists who were such a big part of your childhood.

Childhood?? I wish...

Personally (right or wrong aside) I am not interested in seeing the Eagles without Don Felder. If he were to come back I'd be first in line... I only saw them once, in their first incarnation, the Witchy Woman tour. They were good then too... not Desperado or Hotel Califoriia good... but good. Desperado is still my favorite Eagles album. I know a bunch of songs off it. It is full of songs that are perfect for solo acoustic and vocal. Thanks for the heads up... I would like to see it I think, I just wish it was from my childhood... LOL. The Kingston Trio is from my childhood.
 
edit> Without seeing it let me guess. Very talented guys get together, have a blast writing songs, happy times, start to sell albums, writing gets better but pressure builds, some internal band problems... then MONEY creates HUGE problems.... now they are older and have sorta come to terms with things. So many bands, same sort of story. It seems like the bands that do the best over the "longrun" are bands that have a no nonsense understanding of how things are and have a leader from the start and there are no misunderstandings because it is all made cear from the start.... that way money has less of a chance of ruining things. I think that is why the Stones have endured so well. They all know Mick is the leader and it has always been settled.
 
Now I want to watch it even more... the more I think about it. I am really interested to see how they see things and if they include Felder's view of things.

From what I have heard, I imagine not... but I still like him. I think it is a good example, if I understand it correctly, to be a good lesson in having EVERYTHING understood from the "get go".
 
I really wish that they could find a way to work it out... can money really be that important? Same goes for Waters and Gilmour... they are SO great together... alas.
 
I really don't know to have an onest, informed opinion... I just like Felder and his part in the Eagles, he was SO good with JW. Alas again...

I just finished watching part 2. Felders departure did come down to his being upset about Frey and Henley making more money than the others on the tour, but he knew going in it was going to be that way and made the choice to play any ways. Apparently it started out okay, but he became bitter about things and rather than keep it to himself, he let it begin to affect his attitude. Frey isn't someone to be screwed with when it comes to that band. It was his band from the get go, and Henley became his partner as things progressed. He just wasn't going to put up with anyone screwing with the dynamic.

I won't spoil it for you J, but the final scene with Felder is a tough one to watch. He is a great talent, but he never really wrote a complete song that made the grade for the band. When I look back at the albums he was a part of, namely Hotel California and the Long Run, the level of song writing was pretty stout. That's some tough competition, and Frey and Henley weren't going to have any songs on those records just for the sake of some sense of fairness, or to pacify anyone in the band. It wasn't about the money back then, it was about the songs.

That, in a nut shell, is the music business from a songwriter's point of view. Good songs don't make the grade. Only the great and epic songs stand a chance...a small chance at that, of surviving the weeding out process to make it to one of the 10 to 12 coveted slots on a given CD. 

In today's music business, even the proven writers, the guys and gals with a few #1 hits still have to compete to get those slots.  The competition is fierce.

Honestly, this band was never on my top list, though a couple of songs always stick with me, and I've always wanted to play the bass on "One of These Nights" ... for example! And follow it up with Boz Scaggs big hit right after it!

A lot of the things that came out of California went on to become great hits, but I personally did not think they were that good ... yes, they were great songs, and the proof is that everyone played them in every bar on Fridays and Saturdays, but to me, that is not the "proof" that it is a great song, or a better song at all.

Doesn't mean they are not good, as they usually are quite good and tight in concert, as evidenced in some CD's ... but all in all ... it's just pop music for me, nothing else.
