  • What audio interface would you recommend?

What interface would you recommend for a PC used to create music with a MIDI
Strat, microphone, etc.?  I'd make one man recordings so I don't need many in/out
connections.  I'd pay more if I had to, but is there something very good for 400+
dollars?  I also play games on my PC--would it be good for that or should there be
a 2nd audio device for that?

  I have
OS: Windows 7 64 bit (I'll probably upgrade to Windows 9 64 bit)
  Case: NZXT Phantom 530
  MOBO: Asus Sabertooth Z87
  CPU:  Intel Core i7-4770k
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U12S with an extra Noctua NF-F12 PWM fan
  PSU: Seasonic Platinum-860
Memory: Mushkin Enhanced Redline Ridgeback 2,133mhz 16GB
  SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
Optical drive: LG WH14NS40 Internal Blu-ray Writer
(I plan to get a GPU and HDDs)

  The audio device should have:
MIDI in/out for MIDI Strat, etc.
XLR 3 pin balanced inputs for microphone
  Phantom power for mike
XLR 3 pin or 1/4" balanced outputs for inputs of Event TR5 speakers
    Speaker inputs:

Headphone amp (supposedly makes AKG K271 MKII headphones sound better)
(Again, should I get a 2nd audio device for games?)

I get good performance from the Roland Quad Capture. It has midi in/out, 2 mic inputs and another 2 ins via SPDIF and is more than sufficient for me doing music arrangement - I'm eyeing on the Studio Capture for future upgrade.

I'm sure there are many other recommendations for this price range.

Roland Quad Capture or Steinberg UR44?  (I can use either for my general PC audio and gaming?)?

Sure, the audio interface can be setup as your full time sound card via Windows sound control panel and your games will continue to work as usual.

Hi Glenster,

I also have gaming DAW and just recently got the Focusrite 2i4. I'm extrememly happy with this unit as it's been rock solid without any hiccups whatsoever. The driver support for this is top notch and I believe it has all your input needs. I use it for gaming as well (on Steam I'm Meshodman:)).

I have a Strat with a Roland GK-3 pickup and a Roland GI-20 GK-MIDI Interface.
The latest driver for the GI-20 is for 7 64 bit and I planned to get Windows 9
64 bit.  What's the least expensive remedy if the 7 64 bit driver doesn't work
for 9 64 bit?

You're planning for Windows 9 (an OS that Microsoft hasn't come out with yet)? If so, then I suppose Roland will have to update their drivers for all their hardware and you'll have to wait until that's done. I would "guess" that if it works well with Win7 & Win8 x64, it should work fine with Win 9.......but, that's in the future and a lot of unknowns.

It's been discontinued and the last driver they made for it was for 7 64 bit.
I'd like a way to salvage it, to use the Strat with MIDI, other than staying with
7 64 bit.  The most I've seen so far is this:

You can bypass the Roland GI-20 GK-MIDI Interface usb/midi and use it's 5-pin midi connector to plug into the new audio interface midi in.

Check out the RME BabyFace. Costs a bit more but compare the specs and RME has always been first with new and updated drivers.
