the best way to deal with any forum troublemakers is to just ignore them. .
That has been said here, on this form of Cakes for over 15 years that I'm aware of.

...the problem is that it will never happen.

Yeah, I guess there will always be some who will rise to the bait, but I just let that be their problem. It's just the internet and some ego arguing the toss with some other ego is quite ridiculous when you actually step back and think about what they are actually doing...just picture them sat on their little sofa in their little house getting all wound up and shouty with some words on a computer screen, written by who knows who that they don't even have to look at if they don't want to. Having a time comsuming argument with someone you don't even know who may or may not be the person they claim to be - it's just funny really and if nothing else should give everyone elses self esteem a little boost 'cos however bad you sometimes feel about yourself, at least your not that  **** .

Sure there will be. Some have a great time with them. That's cool by me for folks to do what they enjoy.

I think having a log-in for those that have purchased the software has many benefits.

It would be much easier for Andrew to flush trolls and the troublemakers that don't own the software....they'd all be in one place.

It would make it better for the people that like to play with trolls and troublemakers that haven't purchased the software as they'd pretty much "rounded up". ( I know, that was just funny to me)

I would also like to see a "forum MUD-room" in the "registered member forums" where those that have fun hammering could take it to the "mud room" and those that liked to rubber-neck or join in would have an easy way to find them.

So...it helps Cake and it helps members....it also shows those that just become a member to "rub" and troll...that Cake has a good plan for them and a good one for its members.

Paul some folks enjoy playing with trolls. I don't care and think they should be able to.. at least it's their choice. People gravitate to their enjoyments and if that's one...so be it.
I know you agree that we have long-time members that do- so...it'll never stop.

but imagine a world where some of the big egos around here suddenly had the power to intervene in and delete threads.

Thankfully there aren't many of those people here. That being said, I have to agree.. I think. It is usually best to err on the side of freedom and though, as I said above, I have seen and been part of forums that really got nasty there was still always a group of good people and there was a sort of charm to the "Wild West" atomsphere of the early forums in the 90s.
I wouldn't want to go back to that because it really did get out of hand and people got hurt. Things got so personal with the lax moderation that one guy was actually calling and emailing another person's employer trying to get them fired over "words on a page".

Some moderation is needed, then again the sort of person who makes trouble just for the ake of making trouble is a real rarity here, if they exist here at all. I have come to think that is something that happens when the owner or admin of a board is a jerk. When they, the admin, are decent people like here, the board tends to attract decent people. OF course there are a few here who seem to be able to see right through the crap and call a troublemaker out right quick like... I think that helps.

Earlier I mentioned the original HCGF. It imploded with the craziness and a group of what I consider to be the better folk formed a new forum that is now a quiet little board called the Guitar Diner. Scott sold the HCGF for some big bucks and it now seems to be the haunt of teens and 20somethings. IIRC, The gearpage, also grew out of that mess and is now a pretty good place, the GD is where most of the older people went... they have a "Grill Room" forum there that I pretty much stay out of because it is politics and religion and other stuff that people get excited over. My views seem to be in the minority and the opposition can be pretty nasty... BUT... it is seperate and I don't have to go there.
Steve, the guy who runs the GD still has a daily battle with some of the same troublemakers (two people) from the late 90s who constantly try to create accounts and get back in... it makes one wonder.

All things considered, this is a great place with great people. Even those who tend to get easily ruffled don't get really nasty and only the truly thin skinned people leave... SO... IMO... things are running quite well here and it would probably be a real good time to remember the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

An obvious spammer like the one who has been hitting the forum last week should be banned and the posts deleted, HOWEVER it is a risk... some of these people may then make it their mission to kick it up a notch and start creating a lot of accounts, faster than anyone can delete them and cover the place up out of spite. It may be a better strategy to ignore them until they realize it isn't worth their time and just go away. I really wouldn't want one of these people to make it their mission in life to make it miserable for us. Cakewalk has enough to do without having to deal with that.

I like this place!

I guess that would be OK as long as it didn't exclude the honestly curious. Maybe Cake could somehow mark users who are owners. Maybe also what version they are updated to, I don't know... but I don't think it would be a good idea to lock things down and exclude people who aren't troublemakers. I would never want to risk having the cure be worse than the disease.

As for those who think that volunteer admins would help, I can sort see your point as far as the simple deletion of spam goes, but imagine a world where some of the big egos around here suddenly had the power to intervene in and delete threads. I think I'd rather have the spam and verbal handbags any day.
This subject came up once a while ago but it never went anywhere. Looking back, I'm glad it didn't.

I do think when they update the forum software, things will change.

Right now we don't have any of that side-bar crap with ad's from 3rd party vendors blasting us in the face all the time. All we have are some generic Roland messages at the top, and those are rarely updated. Wait until real money gets involved with advertising on the forum. Then you'll see a change. It will be an Ad-Fest and will be monitored to a pulp.

So, like I always say, "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it."

The Maillard Reaction

Boxing matches have referees.

This forum should be moderated... back handed threats referring to a willingness to pay for someone's dental work after you are done force feeding them your opinion don't last very long on forums like Gearslutz. A post such as that would be moderated swiftly. The guys making money from managing the Gearslutz site traffic know that childish outbursts like that are a distraction that hurt all forum users and they will not put up with it.

It's a testament to Cakewalk's lack of clear leadership that the policies regarding civil disagreement have become so ambiguous at this forum.

best regards,
mike

This forum is from a different era. The people that created this forum are long gone and the 'Facebook' generation that has replaced them doesn't care about forums.

Once advertising and the potential for revenue comes in to play, then the grumpy old 38 year old's in management that worry about the bottom line will start making the 20 somethings care, or they'll step in and do it themselves.

Time will tell.

I guess you didn't read #13.

Maybe my idea of how things should be is scattered...

There would be a forum for anybody...then there would be a forum with sub forums just has it is now. The only difference is that everybody in it would be those that owned the software.

It would simply mean that those that didn't own the software would not be "seen" or participating in threads with those that do and are logged-in as registered owners.

The reasons I think it's a good idea are easy to understand.....and I'll say again, it's not my idea.
I just liked it when I read it.

We really do have it good here Bub. There was another forum I used to visit, not music related. I drifted away for a while and one day I decided to visit. It was gone and in it was a Facebook page. I tried to use it, tried to like it... but not for long. Gone was the ability to start a thread, the FB version just had topics started by the admins that people could comment on... it was/is sad and useless. I would hate to see that here.

I think I am going to catch up on Cakewalk YT videos and finish Karl's SWA today. This is disturbing somehow...

Yeah, I'm going to sign off now too and try to resurrect that project that got corrupted last night. I'm sure you saw the 'Look Here Kiddies' thread.

I think I'm going to back out a while like I was planning before.

I'm really tired of the constant barrage of attacks and dual standards and this whole place has been quite disturbing to me lately to be honest. Just not fun any more.
