edit> I've been thinking about this ever since I saw the show but I forgot to mention it until now and it is a combination observation/question. I noticed that Daryl, while singing Sara Smile with Rumer was using some Samson microphone. I was of the opinion that Samson was lower end junk... Does Samson make a good vocal live mic or do you think it was for an endorsement with the vocals overdubbed? The mic looks like the CLS except that it doesn't have small blue lettering, it had larger black SAMSON lettering.
Do I have an unfounded prejudice? Curious...

Really good... really good. They are a great mix. We had never heard of Rumer. She started siging and yep, my wife say's, "she sounds just like Karen Carpenter". I looked her up, it seems that is what a LOT of other people say too. My wife has a uncanny ability to tell who any singer she hears is. I almost never know unless it is obvious... but she always does.

All of his shows I've heard have been good but this one was better than most... at least to me. Now my wife wants both of Rumer's CDs for her birthday next month. That is good, I know what to get! We spent the day today driving around car shopping... that is hard. Hers got totalled, no one was hurt.

I didn't catch all of the show, but I was definitely struck by the Carpenter thing too.  I guess I will be looking her up soon.

Can't answer that professionally, but realistically I see nothing wrong with Samson gear if it works. I use some.

A lot of "2nd grade" stuff gets a bad rap for no real reason but status.

They're probably as good as any other prosumer brand out there or they wouldn't have lasted as long as they have.

They're more popular with the comercial A/V market than with music production though.

ie. Before you laugh at a Radio Shack mic, look at who actually makes it.

As for Rumer, I saw a TV news type report on her a while back and thought she sounded more like a certain 60's French singer which will remain nameless because I forgot the name. She did one of Burt Bacharach's songs and caught his attention.

I thought she sounded like Karen Carptenter (and many others do as well).

I had never heard of her before someone posted the link to the show of her at Live at Daryls a couple of months ago, but she's an incredible vocalist.

The only thing I have heard about those songs done at Daryl's House, is that the Engineer has to perform magic just to make them sound good. The songs are not played with that in mind (to make a recording). Rumer sounds somewhat like Karen Carpenter but that is all - close. The show is even on attenna TV around here for half-hour someday (I would have to look it up to know for sure - I think Saturday like 1 to 1:30PM)??

You mean she has a really thin tone?

She, Rumer, does not play drums though. Karen was a really good drummer.

Julien - true, but I was only comparing their voices.

Craig (ITYRN) - I have no idea what you mean by that.
