Yea, because music is ALL to do with visuals.
There is no hope for music going forward. The only road I see is more computer generated crap and product. The age of so called "real" music is gone. Not saying everything was better back in the day, but at least it was, to some extent, honest. These days you can't tell the difference between a comercial and a song ... it is all bland crap.
I don't mid though, there is enough good stuff to last a lifetime, but there is no place for real music from here on and anyone thinking otherwise is kidding themselves. American Idol ... jesus christ.

You do realize everything you do in Sonar is "computer generated" though, right?

Absolutely, I never claimed to be a true musical genius or anything. I am just playing around. Listening to most of the stuff produced, so is the vast majority of other people too.

I didn't mean you in particular (I have no idea what kind of music you produce), what I meant was, everything we do in a digital audio workstation is "computer generated."

From a certain perspective, popular music is bound to become, uh, popular... There's a much bigger difference between Bach and the Beatles than between The Beatles and whoever is a big pop star today.

Both are the result of democratization (some could be tempted to call it degeneration), one is just in a more advanced state of, well, putrefaction.

That's coming from a die-hard Beatles fan. Everything is relative.

Tool has just announced a new album for 2018 - there still is some good music out there. It's usually just not topping the charts.

For me, anyway, it's a non-issue. I've long stopped looking for new music and decided to focus on good music - regardless of when it was released. Since both are often mutually exclusive, I waste a lot less time this way. Granted, most of my favorite music of the last few years was written centuries ago or recorded in the 70's, but one needs to prioritize. You've only got so much time on this earth.

Ya. I knows what I likes and that's what I likes.

If I wanted to see strippers (and or loudmouthed posturing arseholes) I'm sure I could find them.

I wanna hear something cool and real.

BTW... I do not subscribe to the idea that music is dying. It's everywhere and there is some very interesting stuff going on.

What's dying is the capacity for the industry to adapt and accomodate to new technology and artistic paradigms fast enough to keep spoonfeeding watered down schlocko versions of what is REALLY going on.

I'm pretty sure there is going to be a huge pushback against it all again very soon. It happens in cycles and we've kind of reached peak "disco" as far as what the industry is lazily (and greedily) farting our way.

I like to maintain a good balance between discovering new music and enjoying the classics of yesteryear. Yep there's so much great stuff out there, even if you do have to wade through so much more crap these days.

I think music being created in computer per se is not bad, it is just another tool. What I was driving at was more the purely computer generated stuff, that is music by formula, algorithms and even AI if you will. Sometimes I think we should not do everything just because we can :)

Well if we're talking formulas, the popular music of the last 50-60 years is riddled with them. People banging out the same chords and singing the same melodies over and over. I'm not sure what you mean by algorithms - but we could for example cite the trusty old arpeggiator, which has been in solid use for over 30 years, even in "real" music played by musicians.

I don't know of anyone who's releasing music that's purely generated by AI. Of course many modern producers will incorporate parts that have at some point involved throwing MIDI at some wacky Reaktor instrument which throws out a corresponding MIDI output, but you'd be hard pressed to find a single track that was "automatically" generated this way in its entirety. I think what you'll find is that producers of modern electronic basic music are entering parts on their keyboard and banging out rhythms on drum pads, i.e. using their musical abilities just as traditional musicians do, but on different instruments. And then you'll find producers of "real" music quite happily dragging patterns from Addictive Drums into their productions. So there's a lot of overlap.

That's like saying every painting is "paintbrush generated"

Right, which is on the same level of ridiculousness as dismissing MIDI/synth based music as being "computer generated." Look at some of the art being created using programs such as Adobe Illustrator. There are some truly stunning examples of artistic brilliance, and yet the artists behind them are using algorithmic tools in the program to lay their work out, draw straight lines and curves, apply fills and textures, rotate and resize elements. And yet it still takes immense artistic skill to use these tools to create things with artistic merit. This kind of art is often dismissed by the older generation as being "computer generated," but really, you cannot even begin to create such work with a program like Illustrator unless you have an artistic eye and the skills to use those tools to artistic effect. At the end of the day, what is the difference between someone drawing a perfect circle in Illustrator and someone drawing a perfect circle with a compass? Or using a ruler to draw a straight line? They're just tools, after all.
