  • Is I7 4770 the way to go for a new build? If so what is a good motherboard?

I am looking into a new build (by the way my old system-the one shown below- is running sonar x3e 64 bit decent. I did install win 7)   the i7 4770 seems to be going for about $270.  Is there an AMD that is close in performance?
The AMD processors are signifigantly cheaper.  But since I haven't built a system in 6-7 years I don't mind spending a little more if I have to.  I also want to do some video editing on this machine.
So I am just looking for some recommendations for cpu and mother board.   I also have a mackie blackbird onyx firewire interface in addition to the delta 1010s (yes I know they are becoming obsolete but they still work).  So if I plan to use the firewire interface I will probably need to get a pci card for that as it seems firewire isn't on most new mother boards
                     THanks

I'd say: yes.

Here's where I go for up-to-date info on CPUs and GPUs: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

According to what I see there, the 4770K (don't forget the 'K') is the fastest CPU you can get without breaking $310 U.S. Anything faster, even only slightly faster, is going to run you at least twice the money.

As for motherboards, I've had two Gigabyte boards that developed bad USB 3.0 ports within the first few months of use (very soon after I was past the "easily returned to retailer" date, in fact) and so I'm steering clear of them until I hear some really remarkable reviews.

Just make sure you get a motherboard with the correct socket (LGA1150) and everything should be cool. I swear by Asus ATM.

I am very happy with my AsRock OC Forumula and the quality of components that AsRock used in this board.......they've improved a lot on quality + feature for the price. However, I'm using the previous version (Z77 with my i3770k) and I think the Z87 is about $100 more.
Along with ASUS & Gigabyte boards, checkout the AsRock boards as you should be able to get more bang for the buck........the Z87 Fatal1ty Killer got some good reviews and is going for around $129.

I would definitely go with the i7 even though it costs more, as it's a better proven product than the AMD. The i7 should also work really well with video/audio editing.
Pick out good (quiet) quality components, and the sum of all these should produce a good quiet DAW that should last you at least 5-7 years.....which is my goal.....:))

Here's a Fatal1ty review with a 4770k showing its peformance on video encoding and transcoding: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asrock_z87_fatality_killer_review,13.html

Ok thanks.  Yeah  my last one is still working well after 5 to 7 years.  So I would be very happy to get that out of this new one.

I also found this Z87 review on the major board manufactures and the Asus Z87 Pro got a Silver Award at AnandTech:

So, lot's of choices, depending on budget/features.......as you can see, I get a lot of enjoyment in looking at these too (my wife doesn't undertand this passion though....LOL)
Good luck with your build and post back with your results.

I've just built a new system with a 4770K and an Asus Z87-K.

More than happy here.

Isee tiger direct has a combo of the i7 4770 and Asus Z87 plus for 489.00  micro center has a a couple combos with the z87 for under 400.  one for about 360 and another for 385.  neither of them are the "plus"  so what is the difference?  is tiger direct that over priced?
