I knew there would be resistance to this direction cake has decided to take the forums. I never thought it would be this hostile.

Hi Beagle. First,I don't sense hostlity. Just a few different points of view. Which, imo, is a not necessarily a bad thing.

Hey Tom,
I guess it's really only Steve's passive/aggressive and sarcastic posts which seem hostile to me.  hostile may have been a poorly chosen word.

different points of view I think are very welcome and are actually a very good thing.  I hope the conversation can continue without finger pointing and lack of respect for one another.

So, let me get this straight - because I have voiced my misgivings about the implementation of forum hosts, and my opinions differ to yours, you construe that as "hostility"? Have I offended you?

For the record, I am not hostile to anyone. And if my legitimate concerns about how this will eventually roll out, and how any of that affects me personally is seen as the 'passive' part of my 'passive/aggressiveness', then I think that's just about as bigoted and blinkered as anything I've ever read in these forums.

Let's turn this about face for a moment:
  1. Do you think the FSF is good for the forum?
  2. Do you think forum hosts participating in the FSF is a good example to set?
  3. Do you think the fact that one of your number operates several forum log-ins is appropriate for a forum host?
  4. Do you think forum hosts should start empty/spoof threads?
Like I said, whatever role those who eventually become forum hosts actually take on, I believe these, and similar activities make a mockery of the position.

And isn't your saying I should just report such perceived infractions by forum hosts to a moderator the height of passive/aggressive behaviour? Aren't you allowed an opinion of your own any more? Are you still waiting to be told what should be reported and what shouldn't?

Finally, I wonder if the sublime irony of the situation has occurred to anyone else yet? I'm speaking of when I've occasionally mentioned in the past my belief that the endless 'drivel', the pointless 'silliness', the 'empty and spoof threads' and that godforsaken FSF are having the effect of turning this place into little more than a pre-school nursery, I have been roundly shouted down as a kill-joy and a troublemaker. Now we find that some of the perpetrators of this gibberish may soon sit in judgement over the rest of us.

It's like the inmates have taken over the asylum.

These are strictly my opinions - hopefully there's nothing passive/aggressive perceived or intended.

And if that seems a bit hostile, then so be it.

Personally I find it hilarious when people claim they aren't "hostile" (or whatever) and then immediately proceed to use words/expressions like "mockery", "drivel", "pointless silliness", "pre-school nursery", "gibberish" and "it's like the inmates have taken over the asylum".

Maybe it's a matter of semantics, but I don't think any of those terms are inherently hostile.  Mocking, perhaps, but not hostile IMHO. I suppose this is yet another example of the awkwardness of trying to gauge emotion accurately.  I hear a voice in my head that was sarcastic and dismissive but with no anger in it.

No problem here. I got used to not being chosen back in grade school. A perpetual "left over".

Forum Host = cool kids.   Don't ban me bro..

Will the new hosts compile the standard repeated questions, and their standard repeated answers, into a faq?

That may even be done by us before the new hosts are chosen.

Or it may not.

Ok Steve.

I have no response.

All you're saying here is that in your opinion anyone who has ever posted in the Coffee House should be barred from being a forum host.

Personally, I consider the Coffee House to be separate from all of the other forums.  I say keep the policying (notice how ineptly and well I avoided using the word "policing?") to the upper forums.  The Coffee House (and the FSF) are like a favorite bar.  A place to come, relax and NOT worry too much about being serious (like I am about 1% of the time).  Life's too short.  If a few people start deciding what the Coffee House has to be, then I'll just go to another bar (like my own which, as some already know, I've just about finished building).  Again, I'm not talking about any of the upstairs forums, those should be regulated to keep them focused (Cakewalk IS in the business of selling products).

Just let me know when the Coffee House gets renamed to the Red Star Cafe so I can grab my favorite mug and take it with me to my own place.  You all are welcome to join me when the time comes!

I do think that this changes the feel of the forum a little (not in a good way), at least it does for me. I don't know how to explain it but it makes me feel a bit more weird than usual. I'm not sure what was broken or how this fixes it. I know sometimes I favor something until it happens then I wonder, "what was I thinking"? There will be more opportunity for meltdowns now because it does introduce a little bit of "us and them". It shouldn't but I think it does.

However, it could be MUCH worse. Cakewalk could have closed the forum and moved everything to Facebook. I've seen two other forums do that and both became completely useless.

Steve's points 1-4, are valid points and are the kind of things that will cause trouble sooner or later, in fact, they already seem to be.

This has been mostly a happy place, I sincerely hope it stays that way.

I'll be over to the side, watching.. if you need me, which is doubtful.
