Oh, this is about football.

Can't be.  You need a ball (which is round) and play it just with your feet and not the hands for it to be football.

I think 'olpal has finally flipped and is just gibbering incoherently.
(or is he?)

To quote a famous composer, "It ain't necessarily so."

One also must remember Australian rules football, as well as the Canadian football league.  Both of those football sports also use something other than that round ball that can only be touched by one's feet (unless you're the goalie).  So the U.S. isn't the only former British colony to play a different type of foot ball.

Side note: one could make a good case that the name of the U.S., Australian, and Canadian version should be changed, since the foot touches the ball only on a very few plays, and is therefore something of a misnomer.  I suppose since there was mostly running in the original version, maybe the "foot" factor could relate to "footing" the ball down the field, but then, one is arguably starting to get closer to rugby.

noldar12 - being a Brit living in America - I just do it to stir a reaction.
It all started with Rugby Football which was a derived from Football - it was invented very close to where I lived in the UK at Rugby School by a lad (William Webb-Ellis) picking up the Football during a game and running with it.
Soccer comes from Association Football, the full name for Football.
My personal favourite name for American Football is

OK, I should resist this, but I'm not going to <smile>:

To the tune of Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So"

It ain't necessarily so, it ain't necessarily so
That football you know, with the scoring so low
It ain't necessarily so.

The game went on 900 years.
The game went on 900 years.
But oh how so lame, when the score does remain;
Zero, zero, after 900 years.

So what is the point of the game?
So what is the point of the game?
To run up the field, and back down it again;
And such it shall ever remain!
