We earthlings have done similar. The Brits sailed the open seas with their undesirables till they ran into Australia. They dropped 'em off hoping the canibals and headhunters would take care of 'em. Instead they made friends with the locals and built their own country.

People are scouring the woods right now hoping to hunt them down and win some sort of prize.

You could just go public and come clean on the whole matter. Put the whole conspiracy to rest, ya know. At least, that's what I'd do if I were some sorta weird scarry, furry humanoid looking type of mythical creature.
