I hate it when he does that ^^^

But then, I love it when he's right<G>!

OK, so yes, the stability/reliability, round trip latency, and let's not forget SOUND all matter a lot more than the interface.

So let me re-phrase... right now I have three Tangos and an old Fostex D-108, for a total of 32 analog audio gozintas and gozoutas, and one S/P-DIF pair. Yes, I use them all, not all the time, but often enough. I also have the Sierra, which provides rock solid 8x8 MIDI. Is this the best possible solution? No, converter technology has advanced since Barry and company designed the Tango, but the interface itself is just solid. I can use it as a WDM or WASAPI interface when I want to use other stuff, and I can use it as an ASIO interface too, with ASIO having a slight advantage in terms of latency.

So whatever I do next has to provide a minimum of 32 analog inputs, 32 analog outputs, one S/P-DIF pair, and an 8x8 MIDI interface. There is nothing out there today that does that all, although almost any newer interface will be able to operate at > 48 kHz, which will become an issue for me some day.

Just curious, as I type this... anyone using an external PCI enclosure (e.g. Magma) with a PCIe interface? That might be the most cost effective solution for me... until I can no longer use the current Frontier Design drivers that is<G>!

I used the Dakota/Sierra for a good long while.  Reviewed it for ProRec way back in the day.
It was a great bit of hardware (well ahead of its time)... designed by a small company of good folks (Barry, Charlie, Roseann, etc).  Lots of small/independent companies back then...
Was such an exciting moment in time/technology!
Suddenly... I'm feeling old.   LOL

I've got two Tangos in service today and if I could find another, I'd buy it for... just because.

I don't have the Dakota that Jim sold me back in the day because it was replaced by an RME HDSP 9652 but the Frontier Designs gear was always rock solid until they just stopped making them and creating new drivers.

I had the Sierra as well but when I sold the Dakota, I also sold the Sierra.  I miss the Sierra from time to time now.
