Craig I wanted to laminate both sides of the head. To do the front it would
need to follow the slope and go up under the fretboard I'm thinking.

Thank you Mike!

Mike you got me. It's angled like a dovetail just not as pronounced. It's not a rectangle.
I know your not and it's a good question. It could be called a long tenon for all I know but
I'd think a long tenon would be the same width at both ends...?

If your not sure after realizing that it's a tapered pocket I can ask some sure enough luthiers
that will let us know.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Take your time, go with your feelings.

Hi Spacey,

I did not discern the angle... nuff said. Sorry about that. :-)

 Seems like a dovetail!

:-)

Is the taper, in this case, the taper between the bridge and nut width along the necks length? I think I was looking for it on the other axis.

mike

Mike you have me thinking and wondering.

I think I know what you were expecting to see now.

If the neck had shoulders that butted up against the body then
the dovetail.
Without the shoulders then classified a tenon.   ? Am I thinking right?
I may have to draw what I'm thinking. Maybe you can?

I've always thought a dovetail was a specialized subset of a mortoise and tenon joint using trapezoidal shapes to lock the joint together.

I was just confused about which direction you were doing trapezoid.

Don't really know why I got it in my head that way.

Hey, on another note, I just ordered one of these to bail me out of a corner, literally, where I have to trim some of my new window frame.

I figured you'd appreciate a nice new tool.

I used my grandfather's pocket plane for most of the job but I need something to get all the way into the corner and I need to keep the project moving forward.

best regards,
mike

I think you're mostly right, but are the angle limits? 2 degrees, 15 degrees, 30 degrees?

I'm thinking the one with shoulders may be the true dovetail. The bottom
is like what I did. Crude drawing-sorry.

NEW TOOL! Looks like a very nice one too.

Ahhhh, inserted from the top, not slid in. Yep, big ole dovetail huh? :)

Got the neck block cut down so I could fit the top plate. Fit the top plate to neck. Nothing glued until in place and time to move to head.
Got the head shaped and Wenge backing plate on. It will look like this
until I carve the neck. This is a new thing for me- anxious to see how it comes out.
This shot shows why I wanted the Wenge plate under the neck. I think it
will look wonderful breaking the laminates with the headplate.

Next is the front of the head. Cut to thickness but I can't until I figure out how and get
the tool to bend a face piece and finally decide on the pups, hardware and how want
the controls and cavity for them.

Hope you're enjoying. If not I can stop.
