Guitarpima: There are lots of Mayans, something like six or seven million. They're a huge slice of the central American population. The languages are still spoken.

I realize that but the civilization they created did end at some point.  Probably due to the same reason all civilizations end. Our's is next. Humans always destroy what they have never realizing how important it is. A shame that after over 5000 years of destruction, we still can't figure it out.

I forget which race it was - it might have been the Mayans, but there was definitely one of the old Central/South American races whose disappearance has been solved by modern scientists.

It appears that they poisoned their only source of fresh water (a HUGE natural well) by dumping the bodies of their dead into it

Yeah, there are two broad eras to Mayan civilisation, the first being fairly sophisticated and urbanised, with fairly grand cities, and then a later less prosperous one after the cities were largely abandoned. I'm no expert, but I gather the leading theory to how this happened was a massive drought, probably caused by massive deforestation during their semi-industrial peak. I've not heard of that poisoning theory, but I know there are various theories doing the rounds.

What I was getting at is why every great cililiation has failed in the past. The concentration of wealth to the few who steer it that way via corruption has always been the downfall of any civilization.

It will happen again. With an economy based on war, it is inevitable. It has haapened before and it will happen again.

Dont worry. The mayans just ran out of ink (or their pencil was broken).

Or the reviews were bad for the calender they made.

The Mayans did not say the world was going to end people. It is simply an end of an era, and a beginning of a Golden Age according to them.

SHEEESSSHHH --- the only fear mongering going on is coming from people that twisted the Mayan prophecies to add to their endless religious old world mind control methods.

Part of the "awakening" is probably people loosing the ridiculous guilt and fear that has been used to control them for thousands of years, and we can thank the internet for a big part of this "awakening".

Even that "end of an era" thing is overstating the case. It's just a cycle in the counting system. There's no evidence it had any particular significance to the Mayans. It's just that their counting system was (more or less) base 20, and the 21st is when the next lot of 20 sub-units starts. It's literally just one column going back to zero, and another column going up by one.
