The Maillard Reaction

I volunteered my way into a session as a redundant taper of a cool little opera(tic) recording session today. I think I'm gonna get a nice lunch and have some pleasant conversation too.

I'm gonna get reminded, or reschooled in the nitty gritty details of what preamps can and can not do. I'm excited about that.

A grand piano and a vocalist. Pure.

I'm thinking it's gonna be a lot more fun than waking up at 4am to do TV live shots for the morning shows.

Of course the live shots pay for the volunteering.

Looking forward to a jolt of live music!!!

Just babbling.

best regards,
mike

Hi Beagle,

What I mean by this is that the sonic character of the preamp and mic combination will be revealed throughout the widest range of dynamics.

The singer will taunt the input with quiet passages as well as thunderously loud passages.

Most opera singers don't use mic technique... they just sing!

A lot of signal chains have a sweet spot... the great signal chains have a really wide sweet spot.

This is the type of scenario where I, personally, feel that I can easily hear a difference between good grade stuff, which I use almost every day, and the really really good stuff which I only pull out on special occasions.

I pulled my John Hardy M1 out of the rack last night to take in to town because I think the performers are prepared to make use what it can offer.

all the best,
mike

Hi Beagle,

I found a web page that describes the material we are recording today:

http://www.lawrence.edu/fast/koopmajo/floyd.html

The composer has lived here in Tallahassee many years but he is actually more well known for his work in Texas.

I thought you might be interested in further details because he's a Texan. :-)

I should hit the road now.

best regards,
mike

Sounds like it will be a good time Mike.

Every year around this time, we would do a Christmas party for the owner of the local school bus company. His wife loved opera and he would have the same lady flown in from California (iirc) every year to sing for her. We would back her on the Christmas music. It was terrifying because we would learn the music in a key we could sing, and then transpose it on the spot in a key she could sing in. Plus we were expected to be perfect because the owner of the company was also the mayor, and the drummer was a Sgt. (who later became Chief) on the police force in town. Very stressful, but looking back, it made us all grow a little as musicians.

Funny this thread came up, I was just thinking about her and the good times we had last night while lying in bed trying to get sleep.
