  • When/why in the heck did it become cool to have malfunctioning muffler?! (p.2)

Mufflers? Lots of punks seem to be installing those "tuned" pipes..... that's even worse than no mufflers....

A nice set of Cherry Bombs sounded good.... not to loud... nice throaty rumble and sweet when you hit the gas....

What still bugs me more is the boom box stereo systems that you hear coming a mile away.

More than once, I've been recording a track and get ready to click RECORD, when I hear it coming.... ooops... better wait.... and so I do. The train usually goes by quicker.

the 2000s fart cans on Honda Civics... MEH

THE 60-70S-- Running a water hose up a hot muffler to blow out the baffles/Cat (6 or v8)... bad arse***

** extra points for mucking with the timing to give you the hi degree cam lope effect, without installing a cam...

I drilled a few holes in my bike muffler.... in just the right places, and just the right size, so it don't sound like a sewing machine running. It wasn't nearly as loud as many of the other bikes around me but I could at least hear it running.

This is similar to what I'm after.

I'd like a 70's Rolls Royce body in a Pick Up configuration though, the engines' near perfect although I still think I'd get a better performance/weight ratio from a Merlin, Packard built one would be fine but a RR one would be more in keeping.

All my neighbours would adore me even more.

I'm waiting to see what the pimped hybrids will look like. Unfortunately beep they will probably have recorded muffler sounds to sound tough. For your sake I hope not.

I seen a nice Mustang the other day, one of the new ones. It looked nice, but then I got behind the guy and realized he had changed the mufflers on it. The first thing it did was give away that he had a puny little motor in it. If he only knew how pathetic it sounded.

Instead of images of a wonderful muscle car I suddenly conjured mental images of PeeWee Herman on a rollerskates.

Interesting you point this out. Now I don't know if we are talking exactly the same thing, but I have noticed the last 6-months or so these little cars (I mean little dingy things and not some muscle-car) coming down the street, obviously with some muffler problem. And this is not some heavy-duty, bad-ass sound. Just the sound of a crappy muffler on a smaller car. I keep thinking it is the same guy but when I see the car, I realize it is not. But, they are all of the similar piece-of-crap car variety. This hasn't been just an isolated instance either. I don't get it either. Could it be the sign of times and these guys just can't afford to fix the mufflers? Or is this some latest youngster fad?

The boom box stereos are preparation for the coming days of all electric and fuel cell cars.  Rather than be embarassed by a power plant that goes "squeeeeeee" you'll be able to produce a classic rumble as a sampled big block with headers, Cherry Bombs and a radical cam growls from your trunk mounted subwoofers.

I don't know man. When I was 16 I am sure glad I didn't have enough cash to buy all of the junk I wanted to put on my car. It probably takes a whole month of Mcdonalds pay to buy one of those mufflers.

I posted a similar thing here about some of the guys with the loud Harleys and unintentionally got a few riled up over it here( I seem to do that a lot)....it used to drive me nuts because there was a biker hangout down the road and these guys would blast by my house with either no pipes or something that sounded like no pipes. You really couldn't rest or even think half the time for all the noise. I understand the loud pipes save lives too, I just wish there was a way or some understanding there. Thankfully I no longer deal with that much any more,so I know where your coming from there....hope the fad changes soon for your sake.
