I was in all probability the very last person on the planet to view the Gangnam Style video. 

This Psy fellow piqued my curiosity, so I watched some other, earlier vids and read his bio. I'd somehow got the impression that he was another obscure YouTube discovery, but in fact he's been packing stadiums with elaborate shows for quite a while - in Korea, anyhow. We're talking big-budget extravaganzas and levels of crowd enthusiasm we haven't seen since Beatlemania. 
 
What I like about this guy is he's not some officially-sanctioned corporate face-of-the-week, but has been sent up to the majors by a genuine grassroots mandate. Somehow I find that encouraging, that stars can still be made by fans alone, independently of any corporate machine.


But no, I will not be attempting the dance myself.

It kind of got lost at the point 'Beatlemania' got coined as something tangible and therefore something that could be banked, formulated, regurgitated and banked again thus preventing such a natural occurence ever occuring again.
 
Until it eventually showed up somewhere else where the bankers weren't looking.

Hold on now.  Having a combined total of over 60,000 posts in this forum still doesn't give you boys the right to come around hinting that Taylor Swift is some kind of "product".

I predict that there will be other parallels between Psy and the Beatles. 

He will open the door for other Asian acts to get worldwide attention. Just as the British Invasion bands took American pop, blues, jazz and soul, applied their own spin and sent it all back to us, so have Asian bands been doing the same thing for years, just more quietly. You might be surprised to find that dying genres such as Prog, surf music, trad country and even American Folk are thriving in isolated pockets around Asia. 

I know there are some extraordinary Prog and Metal bands out of the Philippines that can't get a gig anywhere, but might if they had a chorus of cute semi-clothed dancers behind them!

I just lost my appetite!  


Anyway, in regards to Psy; the music is a little too frantic for my taste but superb songwriting and the production is well done.... yes, I love those chicks and they do add a lot of that; 'oh yeah baby'.  The music and visuals are hypnotic, captivating and may cause some people to experience a brain f@rt followed by permanent ecstasy. 

A.  Korean girls are hot, hot!!

B.  Psy is absolutely hilarious.   Meaningless, but funny, funny, funny!

Funny, I hadn't really given much thought to Psy's music. I was more intrigued by the social phenomenon. But actually, the music's not bad. 

Of course, any time you hear lyrics in a language you don't speak you tend to give them the benefit of doubt and assume that they're clever and profound. French lyrics always sound cool, even when they're stupid. German lyrics always sound like they're telling a dirty joke. Spanish lyrics are what Kenny G would use if he used lyrics. Swedish lyrics sound like a booze-fueled lynching party. Korean lyrics? Hmm. You tell me. 
 
Mainly, I just like that it's happy music. Maybe it's because I've just popped my umpteenth Percocet of the day, but I do like happy music.
