A few days ago I posted a link ot a fretless Stratofaker from Rondo music. I was thinking last night about something and I wonder if it makes any sense...

What if one were to install a MIDI pickup system, make a cheap fretless guitar "Roland ready" ?? Since I have never had or even played a MIDI equipped guitar of any kind I don't know what, if anything, would be an advantage but I was thinking about orchestral strings and a fretless guitar controller. Of course I could buy a Roland ready Strat and change the neck to  a fretless, that might be easier that making a guitar with a fretless neck into a MIDI controller... BUT...

thoughts??

Would a fretless MIDI guitar be cool or dumb?

The only reason you need a special midi guitar with a hex PU is because it's necessary for polyphonic playing.

Are you intending to play chords on a fretless guitar?

I've never played either a fretless guitar or a MIDI guitar... that is why I asked if it is a cool idea or a dumb idea.

I really don't know. I would use it as a controller but, it is just an idea I had so I don't know how or if it would work well... why I asked.

The Maillard Reaction
Consider that most synths are already set up to receive note information from a key board as a series of discrete values.

Portamento effects are usually incorporated in the patches that need the effect to seem realistic.
The pitch wheel augments portamento functionality.

I guess some synths are optimized for ribbon controllers... a fret less guitar would seem like a polyphonic ribbon controller.

mike

Midi guitar systems generally translate everything to Note# + Pitch Wheel.

The pitch bend amounts have to be set to match between the midi guitar interface and the synth patch or things get very funny.

So... it probably wouldn't be a controllable controller?

Thanks... inquiring minds want to know.

I wouldn't fret it.
