Routers are most definitely bad magic.

I'm very meticulous about keeping my passwords in order but I was setting this stupid thing up from scratch. The friggen' cable guys were supposed to leave a wireless modem which they did not so I had to scrounge a router until they get their BLEEP together. I had actually set this one up before but I really don't know what the problem was this time. After spending a bunch of time on the phone with the ISP and then a nice young man in India (who was initially pulling some data mining crap) I realized that the answers were buried deep within the router's manual. Very... VERY annoying. At least I can now fall asleep watching documentaries on youtube again. My brain refuses to shut off at night without them.

Is the router sorry?

Seems there's a lot of that going around lately.

@sharke... I actually made a point of asking the ISP to leave a bleeping wireless modem here and now they are making me wait a couple weeks. I mean... they won't even just mail me one. Jerks. However this router seems to be working fabulously now so I might just tell them to get bent and they'll not be getting the rental fee on the new modem. Service chick the other day was acting all put out that I was asking about it too and I was being sweet as honey as usual.

@bapu... I forgave it. It's giving me some sweet speed... and I'm also realizing that I was right in my assumption that some arse was stealing my bandwidth in my old place despite many MANY snotty denials.

However... still many trials ahead. A lot of repairs that were promised on the new room were half assed or not done at all. Gotta sort that out now. What a werld... what a werld.

I was having router issues... freezing up several times a day. The tech support folks told me the router was too old and that was the likely cause of the issues.... they could send me a new one.... but this one came with a monthly rental fee.

I went to Staples and bought a combo wireless wi-fi router and installed it myself.  A call to the ISP got me the ADSL VPI & VCI numbber so it could decode the CenturyLink DSL.... and waaa laa I was back on the net.

But...... that's not the end of the story.... I have an IP camera which I can view on my LAN but also wanted to try to port forward it so I can view off site as well..... what a pain. I set up the port forwarding and now my Netflix won't connect with it's wi-fi connection.

So today... one of my projects is to default the router and start over.... or at least try to figure out how to get the Netflix working again.... I may just cut the crap and wire it to the switch.... and not mess with the wireless aspect.

After years of being unreasonably cheap, I succumbed about a month ago to the inevitable and bought a more expensive router.  Since then, I've had better speed, no dropped connections, and no more calls from annoyed family members complaining that I had broken the Internet.

I also forwarded my phone to a call center in Bangalore.
