the first part about how many bits a 5 minute song takes up really has no relevance to whether or not we'll run out of songs or not.  but the rest of it is very interesting.

Some of the links listed under "Show More" are good also. I thought the Part-1 under "Everything Is A Remix" was enlighteneing regarding one of my past favorite groups, Led Zeppelin.

And here's another viewpoint (maybe less intellectual) but more funny by the late great George Carlin (note: George doesn't mind the f-word):

Interesting... He is the master of the obvious! I may watch some more vids later.

I guess Captian Beefheart didn't get the memo.... John Coltrain sort of pushed against the boundary with Ascension too.

The Love Me Tender bit was an eye opener... a total ripoff. I was, as most, well aware of God Save the King/Queen and My Country etc...
Some early Church hymns took their meody from bar room drinking songs... or so I've heard.

Like King Solomon said... "There is nothing new under the sun".

"Love Me Tender" is not exactly a ripoff - "Aura Lee" is public domain - Elvis and his writers they used the melody on purpose.

On a tangent of what he said.

Last night I just read a chapter in The Power of Habit about the song "Hey Ya".

Its seems the song was rejected by the public in it's early release (apparently they now know how many people are listening to a particular radios station and when they change the station) because it was "too different". Something like > 70% of the time.

So, for a few weeks they sandwiched the song in between "familiar" songs and within two weeks the change rate went down to 27% and a few weeks after that it went down to < 6%. The song went on to sell ~6 mil copies and won a Grammy (or more, IIRC).

So, I've determined that to get Frank Tanton to like The Forum Monkeys, we have to sandwich our comedy songs in between a Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton.

Jamesg1213 on the other hand.....

Same with 'It's Now or Never' which is the melody from 'O Sole Mio'. (Or 'Just One Cornetto')
