Well, that's part of the problem, he's not there. He's on the East Coast. The only person there is his wife, and she won't answer the door when I go to their house. I guess I can kind of understand why if she's there alone. He's selling the wood from his house. He's got a big sign in his front yard "1 Cord Firewood $175. Call ..." and his phone number. When you call the number, he calls you back and has 2 of his employee's meet you there.

It's funny ... the guy was just here that sold me the thingy that's almost done. (If ya don't get it, look for the other thread Doh! :) ) I was talking to him about the firewood and he said he just bought a cord from a different guy. The guy had it all stacked by the cord and it took two trips with the wood stacked even to the top of his truck bed. I got a tape measure and measured his truck bed. He has a quad cab, short bed Dodge very similar to my Sierra. The bed was identical to mine within a couple inches. You should have seen the look on his face. He says, "Son of a **tch! He ****ed me!" and now he's going back to talk to that guy.

Cord=128 ... 2 Truck loads=77. Like I keep sayin', it ain't rocket science and no matter how ya slice it it ain't right.

I just wonder how many people have been screwed over by these scumbags ...

When I originally went his wife was there and she had her dog outside with her. He was all stitched up and had a bunch of fur shaved off. I asked her what was wrong with him and she said someone shot him and when she found out she was gonna shoot them. Gee ... I wonder why they shot her dog? Maybe it was someone else they screwed over perhaps? I'd hate to think someone would stoop that low ... but we ain't exactly talking about a group of scholars here. LOL

when I buy wood, I pay the "delivered" price and I'm there while they stack it in my firewood holder.  I usually only buy 1/2 cord, but that's easy enough to determine in my holder.

and yes, I have a pickup truck (1500 Sierra as well), but by paying for the delivered price, they deliver it, stack it and I supervise and decide if they've given me enough or not right there on the spot.

A cord should be approximately 4 feet wide by 4 feet high and 8 feet in length.  My wood shed was 16 long, 4 deep and 8 high.... so it would hold 4 cord properly stacked... but after the first two,, the rest was thrown in. 

Anyone selling cords of wood should have it stacked that way to at least give you the confidence that you are buying a full cord. 

Around here, they sell it by the pickup truck load. A full sized pickup, full and stacked above the top of the bed (read piled in)  is considered to be half a cord.  

I used to burn wood as my primary heat source and generally hated to buy commercially since they all cut to 24 inches and my stove handled 18 inch logs. So I always had to recut almost the entire load. I would very often jump in my pickup truck and head out to the old wood lots where they had clear cut for the logging industry and go in and cut the culls to my specific length. It was hard work, but it was also free.

I just moved here from Iowa ... I live in Peculiar Missouri.  Not in town, out in the country between Raymore and Peculiar. It's basically the outer edge of Kansas City Mo. before everything starts turning in to corn fields.

4x4x8 is the standard. I used to cut firewood and I've sold some over the years. People got a tight stacked 4x4x8 when they bought it from me ... not this criss crossed log on the bottom crap that some of these guys pull. Burning wood is no different than burning gas, pellet's or anything else. You pay for a certain amount of fuel, if you get shorted, that cost per BTU goes way up.

These guys have it stacked odd and covered up, and they bring it from the back of the pile so you can't really see what you are getting. It's just one giant pile with a few rows to walk through here and there.

The fireplace in this house is 34" Wide x 32" Deep x 48" Tall. I don't know if that's better or worse. My property is lined on 2 sides with Hedge, and a lot of them have fallen over, or the branches are leaning so much they are touching the ground. My chainsaw died, so I need to get another one and go clean up the tree line. I'll probably get 3 or 4 cords just from that. Hedge burns so hot though, it's not something to burn regularly. My father in law up in Ia has 5 cords of Hedge and he saves it for when the weather gets really cold. It's not uncommon to have -20 temps up in Ia. Doubt I'll see that down here.

Well, I meant maybe there's a reason for the town being called that.
It certainly is peculiar that a wood seller doesn't know what a cord is.
Sadly, it's not peculiar for a wood seller to know that most of his customers won't know what a cord is.

While trying not to paint too broad of a picture with too broad of a brush, I'd have to say, going by my experience down here so far dealing with people ... it doesn't surprise me in the least if he truly didn't know what a cord is.

I don't know what's worse, if he's really that stupid and doesn't know any better, or if he's intentionally taking advantage of people.
