Get one for the power requirement (output) you need. It certainly won't need to be continuously rated will it?

It doesn't matter then which one you choose unless you need to run it without a mains outlet, in which case you only have one option anyway.

A pretty lame McQ style 'for the sake of it' question as ever all told.

Maybe it's an AC/DC motor?

why wouldn't you use a stepper  motor for the telescope instead of an AC or DC one?

This has me thinking that maybe I can make a winder out of an old foot powered sewing machine. The speed would be infinitly variable until I got tired, heck the sewing machine mech itself might make an attractive thing to modify....but what do I know?

All I need to run is a little protein in the morning.

Seriously motor speed control is as complicated as you want to make it. We have motor controllers here running into the thousands of dollars, they vary the sine and the voltage. These things run in the 20/30 HP range though. Good luck getting it all worked out...did you get the mic working?
