I have no idea why Rory Gallagher wasn't stupendously massive (a la Hendrix and Clapton). I cannot listen to him without wanting to pick up my guitar straight away.

The answer is in the title of the film.

I don't know about anyone else but I was a massive fan, he's probably the performer that I've seen the most times.

The true travelling minstrel of time honoured tradition it was in his DNA to be out gigging, he just sounded like he was meant to be there wherever you saw him.

The Maillard Reaction

It seems to me that his timing, of his career trajectory, was awkward.

By the the time he was distributed in USA there were numerous home grown acts like the Allman Brothers,  Lynnard Skynard, and the Edgar Winters Band playing music inspired by the old blues guys that was also fresh and speaking to the times.

I have a few of his records... but it never clicked for me.

I can imagine a live show would have been great... but great live shows in the genre were fairly common at the time.

It also seems like the Faces were crushing the arena sales in USA at that moment. They were bigger business than the bands that are more famous for having been big in that era.

There was lots and lots of competition for a road guy like Mr. Gallagher to compete with.

best regards,
mike

Yep that was the thing, he was most definitely a road guy as you put it.

Given the amount of times I saw him I never had more than a couple of albums and TBH I never played 'em much, but I'm sure glad I was around at that time.

He actually alludes to it early in the film when he states that "you can't really manufacture what I do for those couple of hours".

But hey, those memories endure for me at least.

The other phenomenon about his gigs is that was always an abundance of delightfully fragrant young ladies in attendance too rather than just the usual contingent of long-haired blokes air guitaring, which made a nice change.

He was undoubtedly what people call 'the real deal'. Remember seeing him on 'Rock Goes to College' back in the '70's. Wonderful stuff.

I think Hendrix was a fan.

He reminds me of Roy Buchanan in a way. You know the man who Keith Richards still has to credit for writing the solo for sympathy for the devil. Anyway...

Have a friend who is a big fan of Rory Gallagher. He even travelled to Ireland from the UK about ten years ago to visit his grave on the anniversary of his death.

Looking forward to watching the vid. Cheers for the link : )
