Well, w/o the powered plug-ins, all that's left is an audio interface.

A VERY expensive audio interface - however, with optional sync and transfer cards - that are VERY Expensive.

Not sure if they sound so nice that it would be worth it.

However, now you can take your Sonar sessions into a Pro Tools eqiupped studio! Just bring your own software and take advantage of the facilities

I think it's way cooler the other way around - you can use Pro Tools w/ the built-in audio device on your laptop.

In theory.

Just expect the worst performance you can imagine. But, hey, if you feel like doing something totally retro, you're in to experience something that'll remind you of the good old Pro Audio 8 days on a PII 350 w/ 128 mb RAM. ;)

Speaking of which; remember when it was thought we'd never need more that 20MB hard drive?

I remember running the OS + all the software on a 6GB drive, which also served as the audio drive. True, I had a few of those cutting edge 120 mb floppy disks to archive some of those projects. ;)

If I only had enough money I would own it all and then I would be super cool for running sonar x2 connected to a pro tools hd with a v 700 .....

Then...I would have it going on and all the chicks would dig me and I could watch the chosen one mud wrestle them on pay per view .... The winner would get a recording session with sonar and pro tools hd ...

In a tent the chosen one set up in the garage

It seems so

That's so old it ain't even funny. PT 8.5? Gimme a break. ProTools 10 has been out for close to a year. You could at least cite an article that was a little more recent if you want to talk about what is arguably the best daw out there - and I ain't talking about Sonar. When my Windoze machine died I went full time to PT on a Mac and it's been heaven ever since. None of the routing issues Sonar has. And automation - way better than anything Sonar ever had or will have.

As far as Sonar as a front end for PT - not happening. DAE which allowed that to happen (and it never was with Sonar but Digital Performer and I think Logic) died a long time ago somewheres with PT 8.

Oh yeah - you don't even need that card to run PT anymore. Long about PT9 Avid uncoupled the hardware and software. You can run PT with any audio that has the proper drivers. That's ASIO on Windoze and core audio on Mac OSX. Sure you don't have the huge I/O HD Native or HDX cards give you but for the average recordist you don't need that, and certainly not for those working out of their bedrooms. And you don't have the dsp like on HDX cards but with a modern powerful computer that's a non-issue. Want a killer setup for PT that doesn't cost an arm/leg/first born male child - plain vanilla PT10 with a UA Apollo. Enough I/O for a lot of people and lightning fast dsp available on input with no real latency.

That article is old - 2 years and a couple of versions of ProTools old. You can't really use any daw as a front end to PT since some version of PT8. The most you can do is to create your MIDI in another daw and import that into PT or maybe import your audio tracks into PT - of course the latter depends on having used bwf as your audio format. That really doesn't count on using any daw as a front end to PT. To me using something as a front end means dealing with that piece of software or hardware as your data entry point and not the end program (PT in this case).

Then again here's one of the reasons I really don't come around here much any more - seeing certain posters as they're the be-all and end-all of anything.
