The Maillard Reaction

I have a close friend here who plays "trad" more than anything else.

Years ago he made the journey to the mother isle to study at the source.

He planned to spend a month in the pubs playing Irish music.

He said it took a few nights to get to know the locals, but at some point it all came together and they let him play along.

Before it was over the locals expressed an enthusiasm to learn the songs my friend brought over which he thought of as Traditional Irish music and the Irish locals started teaching my friend their favorite songs which they thought of as new world Appalachian folk.

Funny stories that all seemed to end up with music being played down on the beach as the sun came up.

Good times.

I love the sound of the celtic bouzouki.

Here's one for ya. Paul Brady was with Planxty for a while. He has a fantastic voice.

More bouzouki: This is The Bothy Band with Sixteen Come Next Sunday. It's a really fantastic song with Donal Lunny on bouzouki, he's an absolute legend. When Micheal O'Domhnaill comes in on guitar it's such a massive sound. I love the way they've harmonized this.

Micheal O'Domhnaill was also a beautiful singer, this song sends shivers up my spine. I believe he's playing it in DADGAD, a really nice arrangement. I love the unconventional meter in some of these Irish tunes.

Is that... LEMMY?! ;-p

Anyway... dude, this is great stuff. My first major project with Sonar is going to be a celtic album. I've got about 3 or 4 hours of material under my belt already. Now I'm gonna have to research Planxty to swipe some more tunes. Cheers.

Lunny is definitely the folk version of Lemmy

I discovered Planxty after having been a fan of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn for a long time and following the folk/acoustic connections there...they really were an amazing band and Andy Irvine is an absolute master of the strings and an amazing singer to boot. I loved the way that crowd modernized folk music without splashing loads of cheesy synths all over it, which a lot of other artists were guilty of.

A little bit further to the left but superb musicians have a look at Moving Hearts on youtube...Donal with some wonderful musicians...The Storm is one of those tunes that will stay with me forever when I saw them live many many years ago...
