If he was serious and didn`t spend his money on LincVolt and Pono he could have released the masters on vinyl only and bypassed the need for Pro Tools altogether.
But then whats the bitrate/khz for a 45rpm vinyl album anyway?
anyone?
Let see, vinyl...
about 60db dynamic, so that works out to about 10 bits.
about 30khz range, so 66150 sample rate (if same freq range/nyquist ratio as CD)
The dynamic range sucks - it's why CD's stood out like a sore thumb when they first came out, because everyone was used to the high compression levels needed in vinyl mastering to keep the sound off the floor.
Don't see why anyone would bother with analog recording unless they happen to
like its audible artifacts. You're losing headroom and to gain some of it back you'll need to up the recording speed and/or user a compander (Dolby/Dbx)...
The big beef with sampling (assuming you have enough dynamic range with the bit depth you've selected) is the sample rate. The reason for this twofold: the higher frequencies gain a phase error as they approach cutoff, up to 90deg. Two, the anti-aliasing filter need to be really heavy-duty (steep). If you up the sample rate, you halve the phases error, and you you can make a gentler anti-aliasing filter.
Was reading up on DSP-stuff...guys were moaning about what was the best way to generate saws and triangle waves considering it needed to be anti-alias filtered to fit in 20khz... not an easy job.
Now me brain hurts...
