  • What's the advantage of Soundcloud over YouTube?

It seems like most people on music forums who want to share their creations do so on Soundcloud or one of the similar audio hosting services.

I'm driven to think: why don't more people just share their music on YouTube? Is Soundcloud's audio quality any better than listening on YouTube at 480p? Is it easier or quicker to upload music to Soundcloud than YouTube?

With YT, at least you can include some kind of visuals with your music, even if it's just a static image of a logo or photo of the band, or your band's info and contact details. And the option to add an all-out video is also there.

YouTube also has a much larger user base, and a higher probability that your audience will have an account with which to add comments.

On the other hand, I quite like Soundcloud's ability to add comments to a specific location in the track (although you can include the time in min:sec format in a YT comment and it will turn it into a link to that location).

I think the real advantage is to have Bapu as your promotional
agent.

But I think you're doing better than me....I don't have a clue about "most people" more
less about all the music forums.
I admit it, I just don't get around much.

If you choose Sound Cloud there's a lot less video to edit.

I think is a different audience/purpose?..

soundcloud.. for musicians to reach musicians... its a vastly more friendly place than YT, i get constructive comments, timed comments, it allows downloads, upload pretty much anything at any quality level, allows assertion of copyright, great place for collaborative work, great networking ability with groups following/followers etc.. ability to distrubute to private groups for feedback etc..

youtube.. videos of me farting in the bath..

yup..that covers it..lol

I use both, and find all my songs sound better on You Tube for some reason.  Of course, I DO have to make a little movie (which I also enjoy doing) for the YouTube version.

No wonder The Forum Monkeys take so long between releases. They edit video and then post to Soundcloud.

I must admit I have found that music generally sounds better on YouTube.
I guess the major disadvantage is the comments. People behave like a-holes on there. You could upload a song about teaching your pet mouse to ride a bike, and before you know it there will be some fully fledged shouting match between creationists and evolutionists.
