I can certainly inderstand the attachment to a guitar. My first electric guitar was a Laguna HSS . I would have a difficult time selling it. I would compare the feeling to a tool that you always use and become accustomed to using on a regular basis. If anything happened to it there would be a feeling of loss. In my case I believe the feelings associated with the guitar were more an attachment and not that it was phenominal in any way.

My most recent guitar is a modeler and pragmatic is about how I would describe my decision . I didn't go for the appearance although I like how it looks and plays. I don't plan on buying many more guitars so this one guitar needed to cover a lot of bases. I guess I approached it like a keyboard player lol.

There was also something pragmatic sticking w/ my strat - w/o resorting to modeling and though not exactly accurate, that guitar allowed me to recreate sounds that were reminiscent of other guitars, w/ the various combinations of pick-ups and by messing w/ the tone knobs a bit. You can get something telecaster-ish, or something that sounds a bit like those old jazz guitars, plus the usual variety of classic strat tones. Those are versatile guitars.

Which I guess contributed to the fact that this guitar became THE guitar for me.

Of course, by today's standards, it probably be the best option. But then again, trying to emulate something that sounds like a horn or that's evocative of a mellotron w/ a guitar made for some pretty unique type of sounds, whereas now, you can get a much more accurate emulation - which is a lot more efficient but doesn't do half as much for your creativity.

BTW, I'm not putting down emulations - I'm a junkie for that kind of stuff.

I like my stock American Standard Tele but I don't play it out so I can be happy with basically a two trick pony.

A friend had a Nashville Deluxe Tele that he had someone put in a Floyd Rose whammy set up.  The Nashville set up has the three pickup Strat configuration.  I imagine stacked humbuckers in the neck and bridge with coil tapping set up as well as a Strat pickup switching configuration with some way to turn off the middle pickup.  That would be a Jack of all trades guitar.

I think the reason we bond with guitars is because they are so organic. You pick them up cold, and they warm to your touch. You hold them and feel the vibrations. Your emotions can be expressed through your hands. We bond with them and it becomes personal. I know more than one person that hates to let anyone play their guitar.

Next to the human voice I feel stringed instruments to be the most personal instruments. I've never been able to bond with a computer attached to some plastic keys.
