Guys - Yup, they're MR-5s (MKII). Hard to believe that they were going for $130 each. Of course, they are budget monitors, but they are surprisingly good - and better than some other more expensive budget monitors, IMHO.  I dare say that if I can't come up w/ a good mix w/ them, buying Focals or Adams wouldn't help.

I didn't notice that they were getting hotter than the other monitors I've worked w/.

Jules - the M-Audio I used were old Studiophile SP-B5. IMHO, these are an example of monitors which will affect mixing decisions negatively. Low end was particularly poor, and mid-highs were petty aggressive. But as a second pair, they'll be just fine because I've listened to music on those for years.

Never listened to the BX5, so I couldn't tell.

I would have thought so.

Actually, I had a fairly decent room to work in in Montreal, and I didn't have to do a thing when I moved in, besides moving a few things around a bit. There were a few massive bookshelves, which helped I think. My wife also has a humongous collection of stage clothes which was covering an entire wall, from floor to ceiling.

There were cushions everywhere and a couple of heavy curtains hanging here and there - you almost had to imagine that there were actually walls or straight surface beneath all that stuff. I also had a couple of japanese shoji screens on top of which I could throw comforter to further deaden things when recording voice overs and vocals.

It was like making music in a middle-east Lady Gaga's walk-in.

My favorite thing though was the collection of foam heads and hats, staring down at me while I was working. Inspiring place. I regret not having taken more pics while we were there. I think the only ones I have are the ones my wife took of me that day. :( A few of the foam-head folks in the back.
