First off... I know I should post this in the hardware forum but I am more comfortable here... so, mods...  move it if you want.

So, I was reading the thread about a preamp for a ribbon mic. Beagle suggested the P-Solo which looks really good but isn't in my budget right now. I am thinking about trying a Triton Audio Fethead. http://www.tritonaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=4&id=17&Itemid=33 I think for me, it will do the job.

My question is this: With a ribbon mic and a piece like the Fethead or P-Solo to raise the gain will I also need a power supply for a ribbon mic? I am confused about this. Also I would love any tips or comments about the Fethead.

Thanks and sorry about posting a serious question in here

Be careful with preamps and anything you plug a ribbon into.  Ribbons don't like to be connected to phantom power....some apparently can handle it OK where as others will be damaged by it..... this is a case where, if you have a ribbon mic... it is very important to know how your mic is affected by phantom power and to double check what it is plugged into to be 100% sure the phantom power is OFF.

Thanks Herb. The Fethead is supossed to use the phantom power to raise the gain for the ribbon mic but block it from reaching the mic. It is like a way to increase the gain for the ribbon mic by using the 49v without it hitting the mic. I think the Fethead inline is similar to the Cloudlifter but am not sure: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CL1Cloud?utm_source=none&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=none&gclid=CKG0hIiQkLMCFQiqnQodQQ4AVw

I am still uncertain if I also need a power supply though.

Thanks,

J
