No sooner had I replaced one 1Tb drive (under warranty) and moved everything back into it's rightful place then my other one has just developed a bunch of bad sectors and is predicting it's own imminent demise.

Replacement isn't a problem as Seagate support has been really good with a turnaround of about a week but the squeezing stuff on one drive and re-installing the OS is getting a bit old already.

So I'm back to a single drive after a fresh re-install and 3 days of getting everything working right again awaiting another new one.

Drat!

Thankfully due to an adequate back-up strategy I haven't lost anything............yet.

Methinks Karyn's disaster recovery contract is in her ears arrears.

Ladies will do anything when it comes to winning a game of marbles.

Disk drive reliability does seem to have suffered in recent years. My suspicion is that manufacturers are taking shortcuts in order to cut costs because users are unwilling to pay a premium for more reliable products.

It's also an acknowledgment of the short life span of the average computer. Why design a component that will last 10 years if you know it will be replaced in 2? Of course, in the process the percentage of early failures necessarily rises.

JB, I was going to make some tasteless joke about the hindquarters being "marbled".  Unfortunately, as I was thinking of this, a woman walked up to me and slapped me into last week.  I had to use time travel just to post this warning.

In the process, I may have, inadvertantly, corrupted your drive.  Sorry.

I wish we could identify the better built hard drives. All my backups are on what will soon seem like old hard drives.

I've noticed my oldest hard drives are seeming to die from dis use.

The practice of backing up a few old hard drives on one larger one seems to focus a risk of loss. I have redundant backups but what happens if the hard drives start failing on the shelf? What happens is that I too frequently waste time trying to backup my backups on freshers larger backup hard drives in order to never have to go back far enough to find a dead hard drive an become disappointed.

Weird huh?

Jonbouy, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles... I hope you get the fresh drive soon.

best regards,

+1, I think, for the 2nd time, my backup drive is starting to fail.  I'm beginning to wonder if it's because of the external case?

I just ordered two Lacie 2g drives because my WDs are both failing.

Also, why doesn't someone make a 50 plug USB adapter?  I have tons of 8 -ones that are around and they all have external power but they seem to be one of the weak points in the backup process.

Also, why doesn't someone just come out with a 10 Peta Byte drive so we can stop worrying for a few months.
