Also, why doesn't someone just come out with a 10 Peta Byte drive so we can stop worrying for a few months.

Peta Byte Drive?

Is that where those fake fur wearers organize a potluck event to raise money to buy more red paint?

Just out of interest, what type of memory do online storage systems use?

The CHB uses an A-Drive 50GB online storage account - how secure are their systems?

And how prohibitively expensive (?) must such a system be that we haven't all got the same type of memory for personal back-up use?

I just ordered two Lacie 2g drives because my WDs are both failing.

I don't believe Lacie actually makes a HD, just the encolosures.
I have had several external Lacie Drives, and they were all loaded with WD's!

+1, I think, for the 2nd time, my backup drive is starting to fail.  I'm beginning to wonder if it's because of the external case?
Since internal drives way bigger than what I need are getting *so* cheap, I've switched strategies about maintaining backups.  First I bought Acronis, which has a really easy to use one-click backup operation.  Then on the most recent machine (non-DAW) I acquired, I have two large drives.  One is a dedicated internal backup.  It being easy (and fast!) to keep a reasonably current image of the C drive, I back up frequently.  The odds of both drives failing at the same time are small.  Granted, I'd be totally SOL if a house fire or the like occured.  On the other hand, even I had an external drive, I'd probably not be very diligent in storing it outside my home.

I'll be doing something alone the same lines when I buy an up-to-date dedicated DAW machine.  There'll just be more drives.  As long as you have a drive image of all drives on a different drive, you're reasonably assured of being able to recover from a singel drive failure.

To give you some sort of idea, at work I have something similar to this connected to a dedicated storage server.   It has 12 x 750Gb drives running in a 10 + 2 config giving approx 7Tb of drive space with the ability to withstand 2 simultaneous total lost drive failures with no data loss or drop in performance.
The drives are hot swappable, so when one fails (3 have failed in 5 years) I just pull it out and plug in a new one without turning anything off.  The server recognises the new drive and rebuilds the drive array to include it.  I generally keep 2 spare drives in stock.

Data centres use similar systems, but with bigger arrays.

WOW

I wonder how quickly I could zap 7Tb's of data with one of those.

(Are you sure?)

Just out of curosity, how much did it run?

I have 5 HD's right now, but maybe when I upgrade my system, I'll go a raid 5 route.   Also, I back up to blueray (although probably not often enough)

I guess you mean how much did it cost?   You're looking at $8000 - $10000 for a system like that, plus a server to drive it.  It would be way overkill for a home system, mine  (I say mine, I just look after it) is the central storage for an entire company.

If you have some loose change to throw away though, there is always the HP MDS600 system...   70 x 1Tb drives in a single 5u enclosure - $35000   bargain!!!

I'm going to start doing this at the earliest opportunity.

It looks much easier and cheaper now just to have a redundant drive cloned and ready to switch out.

I've got all the UAD plugs. Will that do it?
