I hear a lot of extremely bland covers of classic tunes on the radio these days, usually a generic vocal style over some very "meh" pop arrangement, and I really cannot see the point. I can understand a band playing a cover live, but why release it, unless there's something unique or novel about it, eg a bluegrass version of The Ace Of Spades or something.

Well, I don't know how this thread degraded to a point where it was neccessary to insult several artists. Cover tunes are just affirmations of the original work. In an artistic way it says, " this is how that work made me feel, this is how I see it." For someone to take the time to cover a tune is an act of honoring that tune. A way of promoting that idea.

Besides the reference to Titus quotes regarding Lady Gaga, I fail to see who would have been insulted. Incidentally, personally I can appreciate some of her work. Anyway, anyone who has anything in common w/ Bowie couldn't be that bad. :)

Cover songs done by good artists are great. For example, I could listen to Tori Amos play almost anything and I'm pretty sure it'd be great.

But I think that honoring the tune isn't necessarily the primary purpose in every case.
