I wish I could compare them.
During the 10 years my LPs were in storage at a friend's house, my original Boston LP disappeared. Along with a few other records.
I bought a CBS/Epic CD sometime in the '90s. It sounds pretty good to me, but I have ear damage, something I'm sometimes grateful for because I can't hear all the stuff that others say make the songs sound bad, or not as good.

it wasnt his basement,it was a rehearsal space in cambridge..
I was just reading their official web site. They have it locked so I can't copy/paste text.

Foreplay was recorded in his basement on a tape machine he made himself. It goes on to say other things were recorded there and at professional studios.

If you go to the site, turn your monitor volume down. It's loud ... and does it every time you click on something.

I tried to link directly to the page where I read it, but they got that locked down too ... you have to go to the main page first ...

THIS FROM WIKI:
In an interview for the Best of Boston CD, Scholz said that "Foreplay" was the first song he ever recorded, and he did this on a two-track machine in his basement.[4]
"Long Time" is also a relatively early song, written about six years prior to the release of the Boston album.

Ya he did record that song in his basement..about 6 years prior to releasing it.
the professional recording studio your talking about was called 1178 mass ave. in cambridge.
where sholtz and boston moved into to record there debut album.

but,go ahead and have it bub....
i could be wrong in a few instances here.
im only going on word of mouth and people who worked with sholtzy here in boston.
but then again,if it were bon jovi,i'd would be pulling qoutes down from their website when i know well that you grew up in jersey..lol.

all the songs on that first album were written in a 6 year period i believe, also recorded in different places, mostly in toms basement(which was in watertown mass(not sure if the site or google will reveal that but thats exatly where it was.)
but then recorded for the album in cambidge then shipped off to(dont qoute me)the record plant ny,ny.
i could be wrong here give or take a few things.

Bon Jovi! LOL! I couldn't tell you 2 songs he did. The only one I ever heard was that one with the 12 string intro ... don't even remember the name! Dead Or Alive IIRC? But I did know a lady that went to college with him. She said he was a really nice guy. She owned the campground we used to play at up in The Pocono's.

Sorry if I came off like a dick Chuck. I was doing about 10 different things that day and was just typing a quick note to you without a whole lot of thought as to how it might read.

I am interested to hear this remaster because apparently the CD was as bad as I remember it and I never heard the LP version. It would be great to hear a nice mix of this.

There were a lot of bad sounding CD's out in the 80's. I remember my stepdad buying our first CD player in '83 or '84, it was a Marantz (built like a tank with a huge heat sink on the back). A lot of the CD's he was buying sounded pretty flat and lifeless. I think we were just all blown away by the lack of surface noises or tape hiss (wow...soooo clean!). As I recall we had the Genesis album "Genesis" on both CD and vinyl and it clearly sounded better on vinyl, also a Dire Straits album which sounded very one dimensional. This was the early days of CD mastering and I guess they still had a lot to learn.

The Maillard Reaction
Listening to Boston and Don't Look Back Now.

It's a blast from the past and it's a reminder that the albums had great songs and song writing.

Good times.

best regards,
mike
