  • How would you set up Sonar (X2) on a 2 HDD system?

I got my system up and running with a fresh install of Windows 7 x64, and all 400 Gajillion Gigabytes of updates. Plus, I made a drive image so I'm current with my backup and if I screw up this installation of X2, it's no big deal to start over.

Now to the question(s) ...

I want to install X2 Producer x64 and all the goodies. I have 2 HDD's in my system.

Is this how it should be done on a 2 HDD system ... or would a different arrangement be better ...

HDD 1 (Boot Drive):

X2 Program.
VST's.
Picture Cache.

HDD 2:

Synth's.
Samples.
Project Data.

Thanks!

this is exactly how i do it..but i wouldnt be to worried about the pic cache. and even if you are,i put it on the drive with the projects on it...even if its not on the os drive(with x2)
i wouldnt hunt it down and set it up to be seen from your 2cnd drive..somone may argue..let them.

Thanks for the quick response Chuck.

At least the Picture Cache location is easily changed if anyone insists otherwise and gives good reason for the change.

Good to see you ... hope all is well!

The other question I had is, once a synth is installed, can it be moved?

The reason I ask is, all of the Cakewalk SI stuff and TTS-1 automatically install on your boot drive, even when I choose to do a Custom Install.

I never tried this, but once they are installed there, can their folder be moved to my D: drive and be used from there, or do I have to manipulate the System Registry to do this?

One could argue the samples could be anywhere if they are not streaming.

I ran 8.5.3 on my 1.9Mhz Coree 2 Duo with everything on the C: drive initially. Granted I was only mixing, but I never had a problem.

FWIW, by the time X1 came out I had a USB 2x HDD external box for laptop drives that I designated E: for samples and F: for projects. Even with an external drive for samples and projects I never had any problems.

I personally haven't tried to move any of Cake synths, but have moved 3rd party stuff to different locations. I only had to let Plugin Mgr. know where to look for the VST's and all was good.

Is there a specific reason why you want to move the Cake synths to a different location other than the OS/Boot drive?

Edit: I have 4 HD's (an extra one that's a bit overkill)

C: OS/Boot Drive
D: Cake Projects
E: Samples
F: All my downloads and miscellaneuos stuff (overkill.....yes)

I thought of just trying a thumb drive to see how it would work. I have a few 8GB one's laying around that I don't even use.

When Cakewalk SI and TTS-1 are installed (and a few others that I'm forgetting), all their samples follow them, and as far as I can tell, there's no way to change their installation drive when you do a custom install. So to keep things uniform, I'd like all synth's and samples on one drive. Especially if they are streaming off the HDD, and I think SI and TTS-1 do, but I'm not 100% sure.

My thinking very well may be flawed, that's why I'm asking. .

Most 3rd party software (NI, Toontrack, IK Stuff etc...) gives you an option when installing the VST and where to put the samples. I don't think Sonar gives us that option (not sure). If it automatically installs on it's own (without giving me a choice) I won't mess with it as I want it to work when I need it to (I hate stopping in the middle of a project to troubleshoot the file path).
If it's not causing a shortage on disk space, It might be good to just let it install as is.....if not, Scook's link has all kinds of solutions (I think). To be honest, I don't like messing with Registry stuff unless I have a real problem.
