  • How would you set up Sonar (X2) on a 2 HDD system? (p.3)

Hey Bub - did you get round to the reinstall yet?    I had a few X2 crashes the last couple of days, and I can't help feeling the Sonar 6->8>X2 bloatware is all starting to get in the way.  I also have plenty of legacy VSTs from the days when I was grabbing everything I could off KVR.  I probably have no more than about 10 regular VSTi and a similar number of FX.  So I'm considering a wholesale clearout and re-install.  Which means all the inevitable issues with installing software for the soundcard and Presonus Faderport...

btw, no sign of Rapture (other than LE) on my X2 install, but I do have 4 versions of DimPro!
Hi Wood ...

I did get X2 installed. So far so good! I saw problems with the Pro Channel until I installed the Quick Fix, but it's running rock solid on my system now, and I'm temporarily using my Realtek onboard sound card.

I got rid of all of my free VST's except for Kontakt 5 (Free) and Melda Mastering Suite (Free). I'm very happy with everything that comes with X2. I really like Breverb and the console EMU. I tried out the LP64 EQ and it is working great now. No more glitches and sound dropouts when you adjust a node. That will probably be my go to EQ now and replace Sonitus. Oh, and yes, I did run in to problems with X2 finding old versions of plugins even though I told it to scan only the new folders I put it's VST's in. Somehow it still found the old ones, even after a full rescan without their directory.

As for Rapture Full Version ... when I initially installed X2 alongside X1, it wouldn't even give me the option to install Rapture. Even though it was checked when I did the installation ... it never got installed. After I wiped my system and did a fresh install of X2 with no other versions of Sonar, it came right up and installed with no problem at all. By the way ... there's a patch out now to install Rapture ...

So far I'm a happy camper. I've had a couple of crashes, but they were related to the crappy onboard sound card I'm using.

Oh ... I'm running a fresh, unaltered installation of Windows 7 with all updates from Microsoft. I left Aero on, I didn't even touch the power saving stuff. It's a fresh install with all default settings and X2 seems ok so far. I'm not even going to touch Windows unless I start having problems. I'm getting tired of spending more time tweaking this stuff than making music ...

I also have a 64 bit system and have tried to keep it all 64 bit....

but there are a few hold out's in 32 bit. So I had to make them feel at home as well......so I gave em their own folder.....

just an FYI

I have a C:\ SSD drive for the OS

my samples/libraries are on a 1.5 Tb drive

my recorded audio on a 1 Gig drive

a seperate removable drive for my Acronis backups

MM, you have a 1 GB drive? for recorded audio?

yes, a WD Caviar , NOT Green. SATA. It is overkill since I have only used about 20 % of its capacity, but the price was cheap then.
My Library drive, OTOH, is almost full.

If you're using an SSD ... why have multiple drives? I thought having multiple drives in an SSD based system actually slowed you down?

From my little understanding of SSD's, they're much, much, much  faster at data access than the regular drives (magnetic). So, having an SSD for your OS makes boot up and running programs almost instantaneous (some people have claimed booting up their DAW takes only 6-9 secs...(IIRC).
So, it's just a super-fast drive than the conventional HD's.

I just feel more comfortable keeping the OS seperate, and recording(and accessing) to a different drive. Also SSDs were limited in size when I purchased mine.
