It was pre-Ringo, the letter was written prior to Ringo while Pete Best was still their drummer.

hard to believe it's been that long.... sad thing is... I remember that song when it came out..... the result was I went to the basement and cut out the shape of a guitar form a cardboard box.... nailed a fence slat to it.... strung it with 4 waxed kite strings (tuned to Am) and proceeded to rock it with the old record player..... My first guitar.... and the beginning of a love affair with music.

it's not that long, it's only half of the century

There was a big James Bond auction in London on the 5th … maybe that had something to do with it.

Speaking of auctions and in Beatles related news, a letter written by Paul offering some unnamed drummer an audition is coming up for auction (some guy found it at a "car boot" sale in Liverpool ... and I have no idea what a car boot sale is).

I wonder why Mooch never replied.

Oh yeah, he

a) wasn't born yet
b) did not have a studio in a tent (or pitched a tent over his studio)
c) did not have any real drums yet
d) all of the above

I hope I get this right.  Pete Best was already gone.  If the article is correct, Ringo was their drummer.  For some reason, George Martin didn't like like something about that take and had Andy White do the track.  The track AW was on is the one that was released as the single.  Ringo is on the album.  I also heard that they had to recall the 50th anniversary reproductions of the single because they accidentally used the Ringo track.

I probably confused you by not quoting myself (see post #3) … the letter that went up for auction was dated August 12, 1960 while Stuart Sutcliffe was still in the band.

Apparently, Paul was looking to replace Pete as early as 1960 ... and according to bapu the un-named drummer in the letter was apparently mooch (how that time line works I have no idea).

Oh yeah, I saw #3 and forgot about the letter.  I imagine they didn't choose Mooch because he was a little too young at the time.
