Anyone done this?

My cell service sucks at my house ... I see there is an option to make calls via the internet on my phone and it asks me for my account information when I try to do it. Info such as server address, login, password, that kind of stuff.

I searched the internet for making calls on a cell via the internet but couldn't find any info.

Am I searching for the wrong terminology?

Does anyone here do this?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Bub.

Wouldn't it be like using Skype on your cell?

I don't know what Skype is ... doh!

Here's what it says under options on my phone ...

SIP account details

Username
<Not set>

Password
<Not set>

Server
<Not set>

Set as primary account
Used for outbound calls

Optional settings

-Authentication username
-Dispay name
-Outbound proxy address
-Port number
    5060
-Transport type
    UDP or TCP

I'm at a loss ... but if I can get this to work for a small fee per month or free, I'll do it in a heartbeat. I have no cell service here at all.

You should check out Skype Bub. I use it all the time for business and for keeping in touch with my friends all around the world. It costs a little to call to actual phones on the cellular and tele networks, but it's really cheap. From Skype to Skype it's free and it supports video calls too. I have it on my iPhone, my lap top and my iPad and it works flawless over Wi-Fi. And when I'm over seas I use it on whatever Wi-Fi I can find when I have to.

Oh and if you're serious about not knowing what Skype is you can find more info at skype.com;)

I have Skype on my droid.... but to use it I need to have a signal and have the "network" turned on. I think I've used it once or twice to speak with a buddy in Argentina on Skype..... no long distance charges at all.... very nice, but I have to be near my wifi or have the network on.

At my house my cell service sux too.... but I have wi-fi and a network cell hotspot so I have wireless internet. The cell hotspot is supposed to act like a mini cell tower...... yeah.... not exactly, but if I'm setting within 10 feet or so, I can generally make a call.....and with the wireless network (data)  I can access the internet easily. I have unlimited data.....old plan.... so I don't care about data usage...calling is another issue but I've never run over, and that's with 2 girls on it but for teens.....phone calls are so yesterday.... unlimited texting rules...

But with out the cell service, there is no phone or internet connectivity.  So internet calling won't help.

Why wouldn't the service in your area be Peculiar?

I think I have an Android I think. It's an HTC 3D 4G phone.

I did a search on the net for info in a different way, I included some of the setup specs the phone was asking for ... I came up with tons of sites that offer the server for free!

Just search for 'Free SIP'.
