Too bad, but at least you know what the problem is.

Do you have the latest motherboard BIOS installed?

No, I haven't updated to the latest version. This was something I wanted to check with you guys as well.....
I read someplace that I shouldn't update the BIOS unless it's really necessary (ie...when having serious issues with my system) and to basically leave it as is......is this a correct frame of thought? or should I update now with having all my components installed?

I'm a bit confused on this......

I would agree that this was the best practice in the past, but motherboard makers are pushing out new models faster and faster and it takes awhile for the bios to catch up. Think of bios updates as "patches" for the motherboard. It's also a lot easier to flash the bios than it used to be.

I'm thinking that updating the BIOS "might" have been a good idea prior to installing all my components/OS, but now that I have these up & running, I'm a bit hesitant to update.

Also, looking at the AsRock website, I read this:

 http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.asp?cat=Download&Model=Z77%20OC%20Formula&os=BIOS

Please read the information below before downloading or updating your BIOS

We don’t recommend users to update the BIOS if their system is already running normally.

ASRock® assumes no responsibility for any damages caused by improper operations of downloading or updating the BIOS. Before you download or update the BIOS, please read " (How to Update)" below carefully.

BIOS updates on the ASRock are generally safe.  There is a BIOS recovery if an update did corrupt it.  On some old PC's and on Dell PC's, if you flash the BIOS and it corrupts it you are SOL and have to replace the motherboard.

On a BIOS, the old adage of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" applies.  They usually list what a new BIOS version fixes or adds support for. Usually, if what the new version does isn't applicable to your installation it does not need to be installed.

I do a lot of internet computer support and except in a rare few cases, I avoid telling or recommending to someone to update BIOS

What I wasn't sure on these BIOS updates is when reading the BIOS description:

(When updating under Instant Flash)

1. Support Windows 8.
2. Improve USB compatibility.
3. Improve overclock ability.
4. Modify BIOS sound effect.

                or

(When updating under Windows)

1. Improve memory compatibility.
2. Support Intel UEFI RAID configuration in BIOS setup.

Now, both those seperate updates looks like "improvement" updates and not necessarily a "fix" updates......

So, would it be safe to do these updates???

Windows 8 support is probably mostly concerned with secure boot and UEFI.  If you are not using UEFI boot and Win 8, it doesn't apply to you.  The USB and memory compatibility look like "improvements".  The others are only for specific applications. e.g. improve overclock ability - if you don't plan on overclocking then that does not apply to you.  The other is a BIOS sound effect modification and not something really earth shattering.  The other one, the Intel UEFI RAID is only if you are using UEFI and not standard MBR installation AND are using RAID.  That's another specific application.

To answer the question, I would install the updates, but only because of the USB and memory issues.

Thanks Jack.....it's reassuring.

I am on Win 8, but not using RAID. Since this board is built for and does come "pre-set" overclocking features, I'm going to play around with it (in baby steps) as well as try to learn as much as possible about ocing.
