The CFLs have little tiny switching power supplies that take the place of the traditional magnetic ballasts.
The magnetic ballasts are safer, less prone to bursting into flame, and less prone to melting than the switching power supplies, but they spray
Electro
Magnetic
Interference into your audio electronics.
That's why older florescent fixtures have the reputation of adding noise to audio circuits.
The CFLs don't exhibit that problem because the switching power supplies, which produce EMI and RFI as well, are routinely and effectively filtered for the EMI, and sheilded for the RFI protection by the manufacturers.
