Still one of my favorite things to listen too: http://youtu.be/AeD-nVEjzsQ?hd=1
If there were absolutely no other music to listen to, but that, and The Wurzels 'Ode to Adge', I'd plump for the carrot crunchers lament to their late band leader every time.

That is exactly what I mean by 'karaoke'. 'Average', elevated by hyperbole, to 'Brilliance'.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. :-)

Of course... we have our own punk rock over here:

I don't believe that Jet Black (aka Brian Duffy FYI) is a bitter/angry old man (I'm paraphrasing here, not quoting) at all.

I just think he's speaking honestly from the perspective of someone who's 'been there, done that'. And done it the 'traditional' way, i.e. playing hundreds of small venues (in particular, the band were part of the burgeoning 'pub-rock' scene of mid-70s London) and in doing so attracting new fans all the time; and all this long before they got a sniff of a recording contract.

And being unable to afford a roadie, they also set up their own equipment for a long while. Rather quaintly, they didn't use the ubiquitous Transit van to transport their gear around from venue to venue, but one of the ice-cream vans from Jet's successful fleet. The band also used Jet's off licence business as their HQ.

I personally agree with a lot of what he's saying, but regardless of that, I think his opinion is valid based on his long career and involvement in the very business he is forming that opinion on.

I fail to understand the argument that record sales (by his band, or by other groups) in some way invalidate his comments.

You tell him if he get's to Tallahassee to email me.. and we'll show up and load the gear in.

And even pay for our own beer.

I know you'll probably find this hard to believe Mike, but even given your credentials as a music industry guru, I'm kinda guessing he's never heard of you.

What is that supposed to mean?

This is the only interweb I engage in and in the real world I live a life of an anonymous gear hauling and gear operating meat puppet. So what if I get paid for it.

Good for you Mr. nice guy.

You seem perturbed that I feel at liberty to point out that anyone that suggests that a bunch of other people, who don't think like he/you does, are "brainwashed and battered" is being patently disrespectful of other peoples' rights to their opinion. That's pretty simple.

I'd be happy to carry the guy's gear in to a show.

I happen to actually like the guy and his music.

regards,
mike

I was being sarcastic. And you started it...

I hope you enjoy the pint. Tell him I say "Hi"... and to stop in to Tally town on his next world tour.

And as for this -

I don't know, maybe like a guy that likes to insults singers by referring to their craft as karaoke?
I'm assuming James was referring in some part to The X Factor in using the term 'karaoke' as a comparision (apologies to him if he wasn't). Well, what would you call it? Remember, up until the eventual winner is given the prize of a recording contract, every performance up until that point consists of the contestants singing other peoples' songs. Unless I'm very much out of touch (I haven't watched X Factor for a few years now), the program has never featured an original song in its history (with the possible exception of Chico Time, which was little more than an overhyped novelty song anyway).

I fail to see how thousands of wannabes singing other peoples' hits during the course of a series is actually doing 'music' any good whatsoever. I think that was the point Jet (and James) was trying to convey, and I agree with him/them wholeheartedly.

I read it all. It was good. However, after reading the thread, I feel like I should be finding something to argue about... perhaps I am insufficiently inadequate.
