Snakes are some of the only wild animals you can pick up that wont bite you once you are holding them... try that with a squirrel. They sometimes put a stink on you though... I caught a kingsnake in the yard in the spring, played with it for a few minutes and put him in a shrub.. he was gone quick. We have deer, turkeys. a red fox,and a pair of ground chucks hogs that live across the road. I've seen the fox over there too...

I've always liked a shallow depth of field with a longish lens. It just kind of pops.
He is a handsome devil.
As much of a weenie as I am with spiders, I'm ok with snakes.
Back in Colorado, Bull Snakes help keep the rattlers in check. But they do get big, and can be rather intimidating if you don't know what you are looking at.

I remember when I was a kid in Northern New Jersey, we would play on the railroad tracks that ran a few hundred feet from my back yard. It was a long dead line of track that was only used once a month to supply Hoffman-La Roche the things they needed to make Aspirin, and a few other pharmaceuticals a few miles outside of town.

Because the line wasn't used a lot, there were always a bunch of Copperheads curled up on the ties, soaking up the sun. They are very pretty snakes.

You did get a great picture there Mike. He is defiantely giving you the "eye". They are great snakes.

When I was a kid I loved to play with Hog Nose snakes. Some cleed the Spread Adders or the local "Spread Nadder"... anyway as I am sure you know (but how could someone from the north) they are a lot like an opossum. They look fierce at first. They will raise up, they have the ability to spread their head sort of like a Cobra... the are impressive but harmless. If their act does not scare you away, they will "die". They will flip over onto their back, cock their mouth sideways, the bottom one way and the top the other way... then let their tongue hang out the side. The finniest part is that it is near impossble to turn them back over... they insist on being "dead" and as son as you turn them, they will lip back over... it really is funny to watch. After a while they give up on that and crawl away. They are a really interesting snake.
