that's nothing new, with brain is like with anything else - use it or lose it.
Does not matter if these are music lessons or snowboarding or new language.
When you learn new things brain develops and thinks you're still young so doesn't shut down certain mechanisms.
When you stop learning, brain degeneration begins hence aging.

You have to keep learning new things to keep brain aging at bay. I personally think one of the best brain exercises you can do is to learn computer programming, maybe starting with something relatively simple like Python. I taught myself C a few years ago and I really felt like I'd been in a mental gymnasium.
