Starise
I guess I'm a little bit unorthodox in how I approach my mixes sometimes. I tend to try some fluff early on just to get various ideas in how a mix might eventually sound. Just a few more clicks and I'm back to the naked mix. No harm done IMO. It's just too easy to throw a delay into a snare or pump up a weak track with a little compression. A lot of my mixes are pure experimentation. I might even throw a mastering plug in to see what the whole thing sounds like. From all of that I have learned that less is usually more but not always. I don't generally play like that unless I have my basic tracks recorded.

FWIW Here is how I have my monitors placed.

Starise...that looks like a great setup...  I can picture "Lurch" banging out some chords!

I also slap effects on early and don't punish myself for even recording them.  I believe if you like them, just one less decision at mix time, if they're applied properly towards the final mix.  In the "ole days", you didn't always have the option NOT to print FX...especially if you only had that one Eventide Harmonizer in the studio, that made its' way to every track!!

Additionally, and waaay OT... I don't get this "re-amping" thing with guitars.  I HAVE to know what it sounds like AT the time I'm playing it...to know how to play, if you catch my drift.  I guess the "option" nowadays is record the instrument with the FX, but put the FX on another track, so you can agonize over it again at mix time!
