Everybody thinks guns are dangerous..... they are not.  The person with the gun in their hands determines what the gun does.

At sanctioned shoots like this one... and many other gun events...SAFETY is the #1 rule.

Being the shooting enthusiast that I am, I know several range instructors who have stated that civilians are more aware of gun safety than the so called professionals in law enforcement. One told me point blank in a conversation in a gun shop that he never goes to a police qualification session without wearing his kevlar vest.

At just about every range and event of any sort that is an officially sanctioned event, ANY infraction of any safety rule is cause enough to be thrown out. Unintentional discharge of a weapon is totally, 100% preventable and there are NO excuses.

This story happened just the other day.....  http://www.cbsnews.com/83...cidentally-discharged/

BTW.... the firearm was a revolver.... double action ...with a fairly firm trigger pull.... you had to really be a screw-up to fire that weapon "accidentally" but that law enforcement officer managed to do it supposedly while "unloading" the gun...... I'd bet that the female flight attendant would have been able to unload it safely..... wadda ya think?

this is would be only right if all people were sane - but they're not!  so what you're saying is wrong. Guns're are dangerous, any idiot can pull the trigger for no reason shooting you or somebody from your family. I believe you'd change your opinion then.

Herb, with all due respect; your second sentence, IMO, contradicts your first since you say "what the gun does".

I'll agree that a gun in and of itself is not dangerous until some human chooses to pick it up (especially if it's loaded). Then it has the full potential to be dangerous as you yourself state and cited an example.

Again, a gun is potentially dangerous as soon as a human chooses to use it. There is no sugar coating that as far as I am concerned. If a gun in human hands was not dangerous why would there need to be a Rule #1 of SAFETY at gun events?

Feel free to call me ignorant if you wish.

I wonder if there is any data to support that claim. Not opinion, data.

Sorry guys, I'm with Herb on this one.

A gun is just a lump of metal. A teaspoon is just a lump of metal.  (if you big enough) you can take someone's eye out and shove it up their ar$e much easier with a teaspoon.

Guns are not dangerous.

And please don't think I'm being flipant with the comparison, it is only people's actions (or in-actions) that are dangerous, not inanimate objects.

A teaspoon is indeed a lump of metal.

A gun is metal, but also a sophisticated mechanism designed to propel ammunition at high velocity...to damage or kill something. A spoon isn't.

The level of sophistication and intended use are irrelevent. A loaded gun sitting untouched on a table will do no harm to anyone untill someone picks it up. In itself it is not dangerous.
