Rain
This week, I may not have a brand new DAW software to be excited about like many of you guys, but...

Got my Nevada ID earlier this week.
Got my local phone number.
Got myself a key w/ the stars and stripes on it (yeah, it seems that many of us we foreigners and guests in this country have a fascination for that flag of yours).

Got my new desk, which wouldn't be any better if I had custom ordered it.
Got the basic installed so that I can at least start to write (and even though I'm temporarily stuck in a corner for a while, it still beats my various set ups for those 18 months we've spent on the road).
Got a few walls painted red, so that we feel home.

Located the whole food market and Trader Joe's.
Trader Joe's has a beer brewed back home in Quebec, called La Fin du Monde. I don't drink that stuff but it made us smile...
I saw real sharks for the first time in my life at the Mandalay.
I have fond memories of a day spent in the Valley of Fire w/ a couple of friends.

And I see people in the swimming pools here, something unheard of where I grew up - and check out the weather back in my old hometown - 50 degrees and dropping lower every day...

No car honking, no traffic jam, trees, grass... Shopping for a new bench and weights to resume training in October.

A laptop, a few Guinesses in the fridge, and time off w/ my wife.

I think I could stay here for a long while... :)

Hey Rain. sounds good. Setup looks cool.
Do those auralux things under your monitors do anything?
I kinda like the slanted down concept.

Sorry, this wasn't funny or stupid. Well, maybe it is. idunno.

Wow, Glad your making yourself and wife a place to finally call home and get some sort of normalcy and setup going.

Gotta be a relief to almost be able to relax and enjoy what your working with.

Your desk looks like a good start to plug out the ideas!!!

I didn't have as much time to play w/ my stuff as I wanted and I have yet to "learn" the monitors, which I got last week and just installed. The rest of my stuff - including the old monitors which I was more familiar with - is still in storage in a van somewhere.

But a quick test w/ the monitors directly on the desk vs them placed on the Auralex and the bass seems to hold itself together a bit better. (Even better since I added the blocks and the shelf). Don't know if it makes sense, but it seems to help w/ the stereo image as a side-effect.

That being said, even if I placed the desk as far as I could from the wall, I wouldn't trust that room.

I see you couldn't resist buying a Canadian beer after all.

;-)

I hope you enjoy the new place.

best,

Rule of thumb is that the monitors should be 1/3 into the room. Ex: If your room is 12' deep your monitors should be 4' away from the wall.

Ive seen this so much an wonder how it would help me.  Think im gonna put wheels on my setup so I can move it out when in use and not against the wall and curtains.

Yup. I took the habit of moving things around when I try to mix, pulling the desk further away from the wall. But as long as I'm just writing, I keep it 1 or 2 feet away, so that I have more room to stand up and play guitar for example.

I also feel like I need the illusion of isolation when writing, and being closer to the wall(s) create that impression for me.

FYI: I don't do that.  It's about a balance of functionality vs. perfect setup for me.
