Yes, the emoticon is 30 years old today.  Scott Fahlman, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon, posted the first documented emoticons on the university bulletin board system on Sept. 19, 1982.  He was looking for a way to make up for the lack of inflection and body language in computer-based communications.  Seems to me he succeeded.
