offnote, actual discussions I can find quite interesting, and enaging as such does hone one's skills, hopefully one's listening skills. If one is only honing one's ability to argue one's own point, that, most often, excludes actual listening, as one is honing one's own position while the other is speaking.
Talk radio, OTOH, generally does not hone one's skills, as conversation is one-sided, with the "host" determining the rules of the discussion, and always getting in the final word. He (or she) who frames the debate, frames the discussion and almost always thereby determines the outcome. That, to me, is not real discussion. If one doesn't allow for the possibility of being influenced by the other person, no real discussion has happened.
